Bruised Ankle 2005-04-26 |
Okay, here's a picture of my ankle after a kiting incident one week ago today. I was in Perrysburg near the big water tower and the mosque using the large soccer fields for my kite-landboarding activites. There were a few soccer practices/games going on on the south side of the field, but the middle and all but one of the north fields were open.
I set up the kite and stretched out my lines with the wind at my back. I donned my protective gear; elbow pads, knee pads, helmet, impact vest, and gloves. Then, I launched the kite into the air.
As always, this drew stares from nearby people.
The wind was steady and I had no problem bringing it into the power zone and getting the board rolling. I let the wind determine my direction for the first 100 yards or so and then I turned the board to the right so as to be cutting across the wind. That is to say, my body turned and the kite turned and my feet turned... the board, however, did not.
I heard a faint "crack" sound and felt a twinge in my ankle as I was drug another 10 or 15 feet by the kite. When I stood up, it didn't hurt. When I walked the kite back to my starting point, it didn't hurt. For the next 45 minutes or so as I zigged and zagged across the field, it didn't hurt. When I got home and stepped out of the truck, I knew it was going to be stiff in the morning.
I spent the rest of the evening with an ice pack on my ankle to quell any potential swelling. I slept well. Not once during the night did I notice my foot/ankle.
Wednesday morning, however, when I stood up out of bed and put weight on my left foot, I was greeted with a shooting pain. Not just a little shooting pain, but the kind of pain where you jerk your foot off the floor like you had stepped on a hot coal. Of course, yanking my foot off the floor in such a manner causes one to go off balance - guaranteeing that you'll have to put more weight on that same foot in just another second. This is exactly what happened.
I did manage to hobble my way to work so that I could grab my laptop and head back home to sit with a heating pad. After 8+ hours with my ankle wrapped in a heating pad, I had no pain. Since then, I've not had any pain, really. Oh, sure... now and then, I'll twist it wrong and get a twinge of a reminder, but I can walk, run and climb stairs and turn corners like nothing ever happened.
I didn't show this sooner because I didn't want to freak anyone out. (Note: Next update, a collection of pictures taken by BBCK) |
