Duckman! 2005-05-27 |
For the past week, there has been a momma duck sitting on her eggs in a planter down in the courtyard outside our windows at work.
Today, Mr. Maintenance Jerk went in and cleaned out the planter and planted new summer flowers in place of the spring bulbs. When he came across the eggs, he just threw them away!!!
Momma duck just returned and she was PISSED!
She walked around on the roof tops looking down on the guy as he finished his planting. Then, after about 15 minutes, she flew away. We were hoping that she left to go get 15-20 more ducks to come back and peck the guy to death. THAT would be justice.
Instead, she returned a short time later (after Mr. Maintenance Jerk had left) and landed down in the courtyard. She waddled around looking for her eggs for several minutes.
It was then that I decided to go down and see if the eggs were broken in the bag, or if Mr. Maintenance Jerk had been less violent than that. To my surprise, there were 2 eggs in the bag that were perfectly in tact. I didn't see any broken ones. So, I picked them up and carefully put them down in the bushes next to the planter. Momma duck watched me the entire time. As soon as I came back inside, momma duck resumed her search and within a few minutes, she had found her babies.
When Mr. Maintenance Jerk came back to mow and trim the grass, my co-worker went down and told him where the eggs were. She told him that he better not hurt the eggs or there would be hell to pay.

We've decided that since I saved the kids, they'll be named Pete and RePete. |
