This weekend, Talix and I will be camping at Ohiopyle State Park in Pennsylvania. I'm rather excited about this because I haven't been camping in many many years. As a matter of fact, I've never been camping as an adult. All of my camping experiences as a child, as I remember them today, were fun. Though, I'm sure there were rainy weekends where I drove my parents N.U.T.S.
I've been to a few camping related wesbites and found some pretty comprehensive checklists which should help me remember all the various crap that I'll need. Because there were several things on thost lists that I don't own, yesterday I went and spent almost $100 on one-time expense items such as a pie iron, a camp-chair, a cutting board, knives, extra tent stakes, flatware, etc., etc. Good Lord! I don't know how I spent that much. I better check those receipts.
The campsite we've selected is a non-electric "walk up" site, so we're really roughing it. I did a GIS for - ohiopyle camping site - to see if I could get an idea of what to expect as far as site size and how wooded the sites are. Unfortunately, either they confiscate your camera when you arrive/leave, or nobody ever took pictures of their campsite and put them online. I'm taking a baseball bat just in case it's the former, rather than the latter.
I already had a tent (Actually 2 tents that connect) from when I went whitewater rafting. Note: I don't consider that camping because, 1) it was one night and we slept for about 3 hours, 2) we didn't eat or cook, 3) we never even lit a fire. The tents have been sitting in the basement for quite a while now, so I thought it would be a good idea to set them up and air them out. Tuesday, I did just that leaving them wide open... doors and windows. I also spread out my 20/40 tarp which I intend to take and use as ground cover (folded over several times). I left the tents up because I planned on getting some Febreeze during my shopping trip. Wednesday night, as I was rushing around trying to get all my purchases, while I was about 30 miles north of home, the clouds got very ominous.
And, without fail, as if the almighty Bob knew that I was airing out my tents, he smited me with rain. Lots of rain. So, while I was on the phone with cranky-Tal, I emptied out the tents of their liquid contents and I flipped the tarp. After that, I checked the weather radar using the internets and saw that there was rain over Chicago, so I went back out and zipped everything up. Wednesday night, despite the fact that the local weather guys were saying that that rain over Chicago will never make it here, I was awakened by thunder at 1:00 a.m. It rained steadily from 1:00 until 3:00 a.m.
Thursday morning, I went out and checked the tents... again. Because the wind had blown one of the tents over onto the other tent (no, I hadn't staked them down), they were wet inside again. So, again, I emptied them out. They dried out nicely.
I sure hope this isn't a precursor to how this weekend will go.
Watch the Phone Camera section for pictures.
I'll be taking a bunch. |
