Eviction Notice 2005-08-01 |
So, if you pay any attention to the news, you're aware that the US military recently got an eviction notice from the Uzbeki officials stating that we had 180 days to remove ourselves from the K2 military base in Uzbekistan. They made it seem as if nobody knew why we would be evicted. It must be something we did, right? Maybe they're new "Bush Haters"? Maybe we didn't pay the rent?
A site I visit brought this arguement up as a topic. Research by one of the members brought this information to our attention...
May of 2005: A prison uprising where the Uzbekistan government used force to quell the violence killed hundreds. Approximately 500 Uzbeki citizens whom fear the continued violence, and have acted as human rights activists, fled the country to neighboring Kyrgyzstan and the UN, US and the EU are supporting them in their defection.

Supporting story
The EU/USA continue to put pressure on Kyrgyzstan to assure that they will not be returning the refugees to Uzbekistan

And, finally, yesterday, this story gets a small blurb in a national news outlet. Unfortunately, it is within an article with a headline about a US diplomat changing his plans to visit Uzbekistan.
Supporting story
This story should have run with the headline...
"UNHCR Backs US/EU on Human Rights Violations in Uzbekistan"
Or...
"Uzbekistan Hiding From UNHCR by Evicting US Military" |
