Camp Recap 2005-08-08 |
Where we went camping is not far from where Flight 93 was taken down. When the area was so affected by the flight 93 crash the kids at a local schools felt the need to participate and help. So, they put together the Peace Barn. We stopped to see what it was all about after Tal had seen the signs for the place on her way to the campground. The property where the barn is located is a Christian commune with about 50 families consisting of 300 people. They subsist by making and selling children's toys and mobility tools for children with disabilities.
The kids have gone to great lengths to keep the barn up to date and they have put in a LOT of work to make the barn very personalized for the victims of the various events commemorated within. They have included memorials to an area soldier who lost his life in Iraq, the victims of the December tsunami and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and even a small memorial for a local boy who took his own life at the age of 18. Each of the displays is done with great respect and tact. There isn't a clear political agenda, though it's obvious that they wish for peace.
The website that they maintain at PeaceBarn.org is really well done. If you have a few minutes, take the time to go and have a look. Everyone knows the name Todd Beamer, but there were so many others on the flight whose names never got mention.
The only other thing we did was to go to a local race on Saturday Night where everyone in the stands was related to a) one another, and b) someone on the track. There was even a race between father and son during one of the heats. The son won. If you look at their web site (yes, they actually have a web site), you can see that they're just a bunch of good old boys. If you could see the people in the stands, you'd know the mullet is still alive and well. I'm sure we'll go back there if there's a race during our next camping outing. But, I'm not sure when that outing will be. Coming up, we have:Aug 20/21 NASCAR race at MIS - Tal visiting T-townSept 3/4 Something something... I'm going to Tal'sSept 17/18 Tal's birthday or Christmas present (I think we decided it's her Christmas present) - again at MIS - Tal visiting T-town.
So, it's not clear if we'll get in another camping outing this year. Though, we'll be sure to get in as many more as we can handle so long as it's not too cold. |
BizB Wed Aug 10 07:25:43 PM Good joke sopops.
Love you, too.
I can't wait to see you guys again. I have like 65 hours of vacation time I need to burn. Maybe I can plan an extra day off when you're here. We'll have to see what the work load is and stuff of that nature.
I'll have BBCK call you tomorrow evening. Reply |

sopops Wed Aug 10 06:38:02 PM When Osama bin Laden died, he was met at the Pearly Gates by George Washington, who slapped him across the face and yelled, "How dare you try to destroy the nation I helped conceive!"
Patrick Henry approached, punched him in the nose and shouted, "You wanted to end our liberties but you failed."
James Madison followed, kicked him in the groin and said, "This is why I allowed our government to provide for the common defense!"
Thomas Jefferson was next, beat Osama with a long cane and snarled, "It was evil men like you who inspired me to write the Declaration of Independence."
The beatings and thrashings continued as George Mason, James Monroe and 66 other early Americans unleashed their anger on the terrorist leader.
As Osama lay bleeding and in pain, an Angel appeared. Bin Laden wept and said, "This is not what you promised me."
The Angel replied, "I told you there would be 72 Virginians waiting for you in Heaven. What did you think I said?
