Sleep Apnea 2005-08-19 |
Today, I had a consult with a neurologist about my sleep apnea. I learned a couple of things during my vizit.Neck size seems to be a determining factorThe leg-twitches and violent jerking as I fall asleep are related to the sleep apneaI experience a sensation just before I fall asleep that I didn't know was abnormal; to wit, I feel like my legs are covered in crawling itching things. Always been there. Didn't know everyone didn't experience that. The soft tissue at the back of my throat is not extremely large, but it is probably a contributing factor in my sleep apnea.About 25% of males experience sleep apnea 5 or less times per hour and it usually doesn't cause any harm.
Now, other questions that he asked me that didn't really fit me were... Do I feel myself getting tired at work or dozing off in the middle of the day? Do I have trouble concentrating (I do but it's probably ADD, not tiredness)? I'm obviously not overweight, so that's not an issue. And, I've had my adnoids out, so they're not a contributing factor.
The bottom line is, they won't know anything until they do a sleep study. I'll be going to The Toledo Hospital at around 8pm one day soon. They'll hook me up with lots of wires and stuff and I'll get to sleep around 11pm. When I wake up, I can leave. Then, they'll review the data collected and I'll have another appt with the neurologist in about a month.
I'll keep ya'll informed. |
