Deck Part 4 2005-10-09 |
I don't know which days I did each of the following things, but I'm going to bring you up through Friday with this post. There's really not much to tell about as the process went smoothly. Let's assume that it was Monday that I did this part.
 Framing
I had anticipated framing the entire thing at once but it occurred to me that I was going to have 2 levels and as such, I would need to frame two different decks. I had already squared the foundation blocks for the lower deck without giving any consideration to the upper part. So, my task was clear... I had to go get some Mt. Dew. Oh, and then I had to do something about squaring and framing the upper portion of the deck. Done with that and still having a bit of time before the phone call with my sweetheart, I decided to throw on a few surface boards just to get a feel for what it would look like.
 Flooring 1
This is the part that would normally bite me in the ass. I tend to jump ahead without thinking about consequences or proper steps just so that I can get closer to the end. Fortunately, in this case, I was okay. I even stopped (and took the first picture above) to think about what I might be missing before I plowed forward. (I just looked outside and it's windy again!! w000t!)
The next night, I had help from 'fer. Things sure do go quicker when you've got help. I finished the surfacing of the top portion of the deck. I love that feeling of accomplishment!
  Finished with top
If you look closely, you can see that Diz has already made himself at home in this fantastic new hiding place that his handlers have created strictly for his pleasure. The next day, let's suppose that means it was Tuesday, I continued with the framing of the lower part of the deck. I had to do some more leveling of the blocks, too. This is a time consuming process and took up the majority of my available time (after work but before 9pm.) I didn't even get all of the cross members cut and in place. As you can see, the short boards are missing from the bottom left of the picture.
  More Framing
Again, I layed out a surface board just to see what it would look like. Only, this time, I didn't attach it. I must say, at this point, I was impressed with the eventual size of this deck. Moving on, the next night, I suppose that would be Wednesday, I put down more flooring. Not bad for a night's work by myself.
 Flooring 2
Oh, I also finished up the framing on both sides on Wednesday, too. Here's some pics of that.
  Finished framing
This part of the flooring required some cuts to form the flooring boards around the foundation uprights. Not a difficult task, but I did manage to mess up 2 boards in the process of doing the 3 cut-outs that would be required. I attribute this to being tired. Still, not bad for a first-timer.
  Detail Cuts
I took this picture the next morning just so that all of my pics wouldn't be dark. This is where I stopped at the end of Wednesday.
 Better view
On Thursday, I had some help! Actually, both kids helped a lot on this project. I just thought this was priceless, so I snapped a pic of it.
 BBCK Helps
We finished the driveway side of the flooring effort that night. I could be wrong about the specific day/date and I think I am because I'm pretty sure that Thursday I was unable to work on the deck because of my back pain. Any way, whatever day that was, we kicked ass and took names. Here's some pictures of the result.
   Almost done!
That's it for today. Tomorrow, hopefully, I'll be able to show you the finished product. The chores for today include railing and gate and a privacy screen of some sort on the north side. Wish me luck! |
