Deck Part DONE! 2005-10-10 |
On Saturday, 'fer and I finished the flooring of the deck. I also found a work-around on the dryer vent issue. Here are some pics of Saturday's results.
Finished with flooring After 'fer ditched me for something or other, I even had time to build a couple of steps, one for the driveway and one for the yard. I'm contemplating making the driveway step the same depth as the backyard step. Neither set of steps is attached to the deck as of yet. I'm not sure what will be the final decision on that matter. For now, they'll float.
Steps As to the dryer vent, I flipped the metal plate that filled the window space bringing the vent to the bottom third of the window instead of the top. Then, I installed an elbow pointing the direction to the right. A 36 inch extention and a cap with a flap finish it off. I did have to cut the last 6 inches or so of the deck support board, but that board was more show than anything. Here, you can't see what it looks like which is exactly what it should look like.else.
Dryer vent Sunday, I finished the deck. Well, that is to say that it's done enough for now. There is 2 additional things that I would like to do to it, but those can wait. For now, I'm done. The major task for Sunday was the railing and the gate. I first had to decide what I wanted to do for a railing and gate. Then, I had to decide if I wanted to buy or build. I decided to build in the end but that was because the only one that I could have bought was 24 inches tall instead of 36. I'm glad I made the choice I made. BBCK went to Lowe's with me and she picked out the post-toppers. They match the post topper that's in the front of the house.
Railing & Gate The gate was easier than I had anticipated. Though, I'm sure it will be the first thing that needs to be fixed or replaced. This, I will attribute to abuse from the children rather than faulty workmanship.
The Gate One of my little issues that needed to be resolved was the fact that the deck was just a little bit too wide and the water faucet is actually right over the edge of the deck. Because of this, I couldn't put a post right against the house as I had on the garage side. So, I moved the post in about 6 inches and I improvised a section of rail. This, much to Diz's approval, leaves a space large enough for a cat to squeeze through. Fortunately for me, it's also large enough for a human hand to turn the fuacet handle.
Diz hole I cut and installed a 2X6 to fit under the back door in order to hide the mess left behind when removing the old porch. It's not nailed in place yet because I want to get some cedar shingles to fix the broken ones on the north side. You can see the spot where the broken ones are on the right side of the below picture. It would also appear that I need to get some paint on those surfaces around the back door.
Kick plate There was some wood left over. I have a couple of 4X4X8 posts, 4 ten foot 2X6s and 3 sixteen foot surfacing boards. This should be enough to make a swing in the spring. We'll see.
Rubble So, the final product looks like this...
  The end |
BizB Wed Oct 12 09:15:48 PM Hmmmmm... I don't think I saw the vultures this a.m. Perhaps they left already? I won't be driving past there again until Monday because BBCK has a 4-day weekend. No biggie. Reply |

sopops Wed Oct 12 06:36:46 PM Foxy is having trouble getting her comments posted. Can you tell her again what to do. I don't think I told her the right thing when I tried to explain - thanks much.
As far as your deck is concerned - well the new one looks nice and sturdy at least. ha, ha - Ma :anyouhearmenow Reply |
BizB Wed Oct 12 05:24:07 PM My deck is anything but neutral. Oh... wait... you were talking about deck-of-cards.
Never mind. Reply |
BigBro Wed Oct 12 04:46:41 PM SoPops, you need to "accidently" spill something really bad on the cards, so that you have to start with a new deck. Battery acid comes to mind. I can't think of an easy way to get this done, but I'll leave the details to you. A new deck is bound to be at least neutral. Reply |
sopops Wed Oct 12 09:45:39 AM I sometimes wish we didnt keep track of the wins and losses! With crib there is little one can do to remedey a loosing streak and if you dont get the cards you cant play them. My turn will come I hope. Reply |
Talix18 Wed Oct 12 09:19:59 AM I tell Biz regularly how impressed I am that he made a decision to do the deck and voila - there it is. I admire his dedication to a project. I find lots of things that interest me that I'd like to learn or achieve, but lose steam after the first couple of days.
SOPops - what's going on with the cribbage? Reply |
Betty Boop Tue Oct 11 12:40:57 PM T - we haven't seen a word from you for a while - how are things there? What do you think of the improvements which BizB has made at his house. I know you 2 talk all the time but the rest of us want to hear from you too. Hugs - Ma Reply |

BizB Tue Oct 11 07:53:28 AM This morning, I saw the start of The Gathering
For the next several days, the Turkey Vultures will continue to congregate near the intersection of S. Detroit and the AWT. Then, one day, they'll be gone. The departure date last year was 10/14. I suspect that they try to get ahead of all that damned Halloween traffic what with the witches and the brooms and ghosts and such, it must get messy up there in the sky. Reply |
Betty Boop Mon Oct 10 04:10:18 PM big bro - don't ever feel that your work is not superior. not too many men could have done the job you did at your house. your talents are far beyond anything dad ever did. he knows this so it is okay for me to say this. we are so proud of both our sons. miss you all - mom Reply |
BizB Mon Oct 10 03:47:49 PM Tonight, I'm going to go home and look at my new deck through a closed window. It's rainy here . Reply |
sopops Mon Oct 10 02:05:05 PM Yeah Bigbro! Your help and engineering skills were most probably a big asset to the project. I was most impressed by your fiine carpentry displayed in your home. You sure must have the patience of Job to see that it gets done right. My big problem was not getting a project finished before i started another one Reply |
BizB Mon Oct 10 01:44:35 PM The people who matter know where you contributed, BigBro.
The railing/gate aren't wobbily. I used two carrage bolts on each upright and the gate has lots of brackets to keep it sturdy.
Now, how wobbily it'll be in a year or two is another question. We'll have to wait and see. Reply |
BigBro Mon Oct 10 01:02:48 PM I like the railing & gate. Not too wobbily I hope. Looks very nice. I'm proud to have filled in the hole, under the deck where nobody can see my work. Typical for me... Reply |
Betty Boop Mon Oct 10 12:54:53 PM all right, i fell for it!
