Every 3 Minutes 2005-10-14 |
Today, I got the results of my sleep study. It would appear that I do indeed suffer from sleep apnea after all (Not that I doubted Tal's diagnosis). Apparently, I stop breathing an average of once every 3 minutes, or 22 times per hour. You might think that 22 times per hour is a lot, but you'd be wrong! 22 Times per hour falls into the high-end of mild apnea, or the low end of moderate apnea.
There are several treatment options which I have to consider. And, it needs to be treated because anything in the 20+ times/hour puts me in a risk category for future cardiopulmonary problems. The options are Surgery to reduce the size of the soft pallet and the uvula.A dental device to push the lower jaw forward and increase the size of the opening at the back of the throatA CPAP machine. I'm not ready to have more surgery on my mouth/throat, so that's out. The dental device requires, among other things, healthy teeth. So, that's out. That leaves the CPAP machine which requires another sleep study session in order to determine how much air pressure it will take to keep me breathing all night. They're scheduling this study for the end of November some time (First available night). I'll keep you up to date. |

BizB Sat Oct 15 09:02:24 AM 22 times per hour, not per minute.
Wow... that is good news on the bladder! Way to go SOPOPS!
Good luck falling asleep at the study, pops. You saw all the crap they attach to your face in the picture that I sent, right? My study was done at Haris Macintosh towers and I did have a whole wall of windows. I hope yours is similar. Lord knows we don't want you having flashbacks to your submarine days in the Canadian navy. What? The Canadian Navy has fewer subs than the mall in Vancouver? There's a fun fact for you. At my study, they even had a fan sitting on a table in the room in case you're used to that for the hummmmmmm.
I'll keep my fingers crossed that they find your newfound heart in good condition!
I'm off, too! The wind is picking up. We're expecing 15+ with gusts to 30 all day. I may not get in the water, but I'll have fun on the mountainboard. I'm charging the camcorder right now. I'm going to try to get some video of me doing my kite-thing. Reply |
Betty Boop Sat Oct 15 08:15:20 AM Wow - 22 times/minute. Like the colonel says, though, breathing may be overrated.
SOPS has to go for the same study - his is on the 24th. He is hoping that the room has a window so if he wakes during the night he doesn't have a panic attack caused by claustrophobia. He likes to be able to see a window so he knows he isn't at the bottom of the sea or something. He has had a lot of the panic attacks lately and I'm wondering if they are caused by lack of breathing?!???!!
Did I tell you he got an all clear on the bladder exam on Tues? great news there.
That same day - I have to have an echocardiogram as I had some chest pains on Tuesdat morning just before I got into the showed. I had an appt. with the Dr. that morning anyhow at 8:45 and he repeated my EKG which was normal, so he is just doing this test to make sure there is nothing else going on but he assured me it didn't seem to be related to my heart - and you guys thought I was heartless!! See - he found one!
Gotta run to get our walk in. Morning temp was 56 this morning but as usual, it is warming fast. Hugs all around - Ma/gran/great gran or GG! Reply |
