Gas 2004-03-23 |
Some 2 or 3 weeks ago, I got a notice left on my door from Columbia Gas of Ohio; It read: PLEASE CALL TO HAVE YOUR SERVICE LINES CHECKED FOR LEAKS. Being the responsible home-owner that I am, I called. I asked what this meant and they explained to me that every 3-5 years, they "walk the lines" and test for leaks. If they find something troublesome, they test the service line to see if the problem is on my pipe or theirs. I asked if they had any open appointments on the weekend. She asked me to hold and came back after a few minutes to explain that they don't have any service techs working weekends in my area. I told her that I wasn't going to take time off of work for this and that they needed to have weekend/evening appointments. This is 2004, after all. She asked me if there was a neighbor or friend that I trusted with the key. I told her, yes there is, but... they work, too. She kept telling me that I needed to have someone at least meet the tech to let them in and that they could call 1/2 hour before they would arrive. I told the lady that I would do what I could and I would get back to them when I found someone. Then, I forgot about it, hoping it would just go away. You know... like the responsible home-owner that I am. Thursday of last week, I got the same notice on my door except, this time, it said that this was the last "free visit" and that any future unscheduled visits would cost me $60.00, each. So, I called them back. BizBjr was going to be home early from school on Monday, so I scheduled them to come then.
Yesterday, Monday, they came. They tested the line. They found a leak. They shut off my gas. They left a list of DOT certified plumbers to fix it.
Why the Department of Transportation is certifying plumbers is a topic for a later update (not).
Any way, this whole gas-service-shut-off during "the heating season" pissed me off. I called Columbia Gas of Ohio to express my displeasure and the only thing I could get out of the CSR was "It is an unsafe situation, sir. We have to turn off your gas." That much, I understood. What pissed me off was the fact that they don't do these tests throughout the year. Nope... they just started doing them at the beginning of March. April 15 is the official end of "the heating season" and during that heating season, they can't turn off your gas for non-payment. But, it seems they can for other reasons.
This morning, after a night at Thumper's house (GOD BLESS HER), I made some calls and found prices ranging from $500 to $2,200. I went with the $500 guy. He ended up only charging $400 because it was a quick and easy repair. That was nice.
Cadence owes Thumper a towel and I owe her a nice dinner. Thanks again, Thumper. |
