10 inches of rain 2006-06-22 |
Yesterday, there was talk of thunder storms on the way, even here on this site. Well, we got them. In the end, it turned out to be the amount of rain that caused the problems, not the typical thunder storm damage.
I was hoping that the storm(s) would pass quickly. They started to build over Hillsdale, MI at around 4:30 and it looked like it was going to be one of those typical quick summer blow-through storms. When I got off work, I went to Home Depot to get a couple of parts that I forgot for my latest project. And then, I went home. All the while, I was watching the radar on my cell phone and thinking, "This doesn't look good." The storm was building and building, but it wasn't pushing east. I just sat there over Hillsdale, growing.
I attacked my latest project wich, as luck would have it, was a gutter/eve's trough for the garage. I had most of it done, I was just missing an elbow for the downspout and two clips to hold the gutter to the garage. Here's a couple of shots of the finished product...
When I was done, I went in and flipped on the television to see what it looked like on radar. By now it was nearing 6:30 and channel 13 had already gone to "SPECIAL WEATHER COVERAGE" (dum-dum-duummmmmmmm) and abandoned their scheduled programming. They stayed with weather coverage straight through the 11pm news. Early on, there was lots of talk of "sheer indicators" and "rotations" and, to my surprize, golf-ball size hail. They took a call from a viewer to the west of town and he talked about the sound of the hail on his roof and how glad he was that he had the good sense to put his car in the garage before the storm hit. Oh... there's a good idea, I thought. But, I can't get the truck into the garage because, 1) it's too big, and 2) Ruth's fence makes it very difficult to get the truck all the way back to the garage (I must remember to call a lawyer and see if there's anything I can do about the fact that her fense has made my driveway useless.)
I went outside to take a look at my downspouts and make sure everything was hooked up correctly and looked to be functional. That's when I noticed the tarp that we use under the tents. I had left it out to get some sun so that it would dry out better. Now, I had better plans for it. I dragged it over and draped it over the truck to protect it from the hail. . In the end, I didn't need it. We never got any hail in south T-town. By the time I finished putting the tarp in place, the rain had started. I went to the back porch and put the cooler under the missing downspout for the back porch overhang (my next project?). Later, between storm cells, I went out and looked at the cooler. Only an hour had passed and this is what I found. - full. Completely full and overflowing. The sky still looked threatening but I still took the time to inspect my property for damage. What I found was horrifying. I was stunned. Shocked, I tell you! Brace yourself, this image is not for the squeemish...

There was a bit of water in the basement, too.
I didn't have any problem getting into work this morning. No downed trees or high water anywhere on my route. I was kind of shocked at the pond when I got to my desk and looked out. Compare... Before

After

sopops Sun Jul 02 03:40:58 PM FEDERAL GOVERNMENT AT WORK:
5 million of our older Americans have not signed up yet for their Medicare, Part D, drug
plan--they are old and confused. We are not going to grant them an extension.
However, 12 million illegal aliens are in our country and we are going to allow them to stay,
protest, procreate, receive support monies, attend schools, avoid paying income taxes, have our
teachers take 300 hours of ESOL (English as a second language) training at our expense, etc.
WE MUST REALLY DISLIKE OUR OLD PEOPLE...
OR WE MUST REALLY LOVE TACOS!

BizB Sun Jul 02 10:01:29 AM BBCK went to Cedar Point with a friend and I went kiteboarding. Not much to post about, really. It wasn't exactly an epic day of kiteboarding.
I'm still waiting for BBCK to get home. Reply |

sopops Thu Jun 29 07:25:16 AM Hey Big Bro read posting by Revitup. Her son is a fabricator looking for work.
Anotrher lead for him would be John Zimmerman at Tech Dynamics.. dont think they pay as well as Art Iron. Another lead --Greg Havers at Bruce Havers company just across the line in MI has a small fabricating shop.
The last few years have been tough in the steel fab business and I'm glad I got out of it in 2000. Reply |
revitup314 Wed Jun 28 10:57:18 PM That would be great if anyone can help. He and his wife and three kids moved to CA for her job with a doctor and she decided to move a co-worker (physician's assistant) in when my son was out of town. When he returned home, this guy was there and all the family pictures were down, furniture rearranged, etc. He was devastated. They had kept their house here because they were only supposed to be living in CA for 6 months, but it became 8 months. After 6 months, the kids are considered residents of CA. They have joint custody - if he can find a job here, she will have them during the school year and he will have them for the summer. It's been a really hard time, as his employment in CA was for the same Dr. that his ex-wife works for as office manager. He hates to give up his home and his family here, but if he can't find something soon, he'll lose everything. Sooooo, if anyone knows of anything, it will be so very much appreciated.
I went through what pics I have of B. and her mom will do the same. I have several - birth, baby, toddler, child, teen. I think this will turn out really well. (I hope) I've never seen this done at a wedding before, but I think it is a neat idea to have a slide show going on during pre-service music. Bet you can picture it, right Great Gran? Did you like the idea of the camera which can be used by your friends? Reply |
BizB Wed Jun 28 06:45:50 PM Sorry, no. I work for a marketing research firm as an internet programmer. Actually, just yesterday, they laid off more than 100 people where I work. Scary times. A good friend and great person who sat next to me up until this morning was let go.
I'm rather upset about that - even though I saw it coming.
If he's a welder/favricator, then BigBro is the guy to talk to. He's a detailer at Art Iron. SOPOPS might still have an in somewhere around town, too. Reply |
revitup314 Wed Jun 28 06:25:29 PM BizB, I'm sorry that I don't remember where you work, but is the company you work for doing any hiring? I am asking for my son. He does welding, fabrication, painting - can learn anything - can read blue prints. He moved back here from CA, has a home in Maumee and desperately needs employment. If your company doesn't need that type of worker, do you know of any others who are hiring? If you have any answers, we'd really appreciate it. Thanks. Reply |
sopops Wed Jun 28 03:59:20 PM This i understand and do have that file, however my problem is to get the folder into the web page.. BizB Wed Jun 28 02:01:00 PM Well, if you have a folder called EXACTLY "JUNEindex_files" and that's where the images are stored, then they should show up. Reply |
sopops Wed Jun 28 01:16:08 PM src="JUNEindex_files/image482.gif"
What should it say?

BizB Wed Jun 28 10:54:52 AM Are you using relative path to the pictures? Make sure that the src="" part of the image tag doesn't point to some file on your hard drive. Reply |
sopops Wed Jun 28 08:36:38 AM Thanks Biz. notepad worked fine!! Have to figure out why pics also dont show up. Reply |

BizB Tue Jun 27 10:23:21 AM Not upset at all. I never even considered it and I was glad to get an outside opinion on it.
Thanks Pops! Reply |

revitup314 Fri Jun 23 10:44:56 PM Glad your hubby's better. Did he remember to buy the extended warranty with that? If you buy it, nothing ever goes wrong, but if you don't - watch out!! lol Reply |
Betty Boop Fri Jun 23 03:38:12 PM Good weekend plans!
Dad saw the MD this afternoon. He had a repair of a torn miniscus (?) done; all ligaments, etc. are fine. He should be good to go for a while but he can't do the twist anymore - never could very well, so we are saved that embarrassmant at least. I am sure he won't find this comment as funny as I do, but so goes it.
Please give BBCK a big hug from us (that means 2 extra). . . . . . . mom Reply |
BizB Fri Jun 23 02:32:46 PM Tonight, I'm praying that the wind will pick up. It's supposed to blow 10mph or so. That's borderline frustrating/fun windspeed.
Tomorrow, it might blow early. I'll go kiteboarding if it does. In the afternoon, I may have to cut the grass.
Sunday, I'm going to a water-park with BBCK and her girlscout troop. Her mom was supposed to take her, but she's ready to have the baby and didn't think it wise to drive an hour from home. Reply |
Betty Boop Fri Jun 23 02:26:01 PM Thanks - but now I have to look up to see where Wellington is!
Such a shame, right?
Any plans for the weekend - well, if there is no wind, that is. Have fun but stay safe. Hugs

BizB Fri Jun 23 11:44:08 AM It would appear that it was in Wellington Ohio in Lorain County.
Sad, that. Reply |
Betty Boop Fri Jun 23 07:20:54 AM Where was the fireman/rescuer from who drowned during the rescue of 2 teenagers whose Jeep got stuck in deep water on a street? We missed the name of the city/town when they said it this morning - all I know is that it was in Ohio.
Have a wonderful weekend. HUGS - mom

Betty Boop Thu Jun 22 02:54:06 PM Another great story son. I tell you - you are good.
The weather channel says you could get the same thing tonight. Sure hope not. Stay safe. love all - ma Reply |
BigBro Thu Jun 22 01:11:59 PM Ok I won't start, but it's almost too tempting not to make some kind of comment about "rubber seals", after all "water tight" does kind of lend itself to the sea level mish-mash. Reply |
BizB Thu Jun 22 12:35:47 PM The east wing of Westgate is torn down. Lion store to Friendly's (neither have been there for a long time but that's the last thing that was in either) is still standing and the shops are still open. At least, the ones that haven't moved yet are still open. I don't know if Stone Computer moved or not.
There wasn't even any glue involved in the joints on the vinyl gutters. They have a pressure cuff that holds them together and has rubber seals (don't start) to make it water tight. Reply |
sopops Thu Jun 22 12:22:33 PM Are all the store gone at Westgate? Where did Stone computer go to. My puter came from there but there are very few pcs left of the original.

sopops Thu Jun 22 12:20:38 PM The first part of your story I was marveling at the great job you had done and rememberingthe horrors of having to work with the galv troughs when I was a young man. You could only buy it in short lengths and the joints always leaked, as well as the end caps. I would always end up with cuts on my hands from handling the thin metal pieces.
I went on th think how nice the vinyl must be to work with, cut with a saw and glue together-uh did someone forget the glue? Reply |
