Diz really loves sitting and looking out the window. He used to perch atop BBCK's bed before I cut it down to normal size. Then, he would either sit on the kitchen table, or on the back of the couch. The only problem with that is that during the winter, I'm religious about closing the curtains after dark and opening them in the morning. Because I adjust the curtains much more often during the winter, I always pull the couch away from the window. This means that Diz wouldn't have a perch to rest upon any longer. This was pretty upsetting, to him. I moved the speaker over to a position where he could sit and look out the window, but he couldn't lay down and get comfortable.
Project Kitty Perch.
I looked around online to see how much one of those window perches cost. They're freakin' expensive. I checked at Pet Supplies Plus. They're expensive there, too. Plus, they only had one model. They did, however, have lots of free-standing climbing towers/scratching post thingees. But, that's now what I wanted. So, I was left with only one option... build one.
   
I started with a platform that was about 2 feet wide and 12 inches deep. I cut some curves to reach from the platform down to the wall as supports. I knew I could cover the platform with foam and material. That part was simple. The question was, how do I attach it to the window ledge?
In my searches online, I found two basic options.
1) Use an "L" bracket that would extend down into the sill. But, that would only work if the window was the type that opens. My front window does not.
2) Velcro. I didn't like the idea of affixing velcro to my window ledge. Plus, knowing Diz, he'd break that loose, somehow.
Not satisfied, I came up with my own solution. A clamp. If I built a clamp under the ledge that reached under the window ledge, I could move the perch to any window regardless of type/location. That's the unique difference between my cat perch and those that I found online and in stores. I really don't have any intention of selling these, or even building any more for that matter. I could look into a patent for it, though. Naaahhhh. I've got a happy cat. That's all I needed.
