Airboat Tour

We started the morning early with breakfast at a local place that is probably the model for Cracker Barrel except... not quite
 .
You can see John, the proprietor of the place over Betty Boop's shoulder in that first picture. The place wasn't exactly decorated, but they had made at least some effort. Over BBCK's shoulder, you can see the elephant picture. That was one of 3 pictures in that corner of the dining-area/kitchen-area
 .

The big picture at the top right of the board is all of the people who showed up for John's birthday party.
With time to kill, BBCK entertained us with monkey faces and her amazing talent of being able to "cross one eye"
 .
After breakfast, we went over to Native Sun Tours where we were met by Captain Russ and his wife
 .
Russ took us over to get aboard the air boat. The boat was very nice and probably fairly new
 .
We went out just beyond the mangrove "islands" nearest the launch site and he stopped the boat to give us a quick overview of how the tour was going to go
 .
That's when BBCK took this picture of the old guys
 .
And then BBCK and Betty Boop played dueling cameras
 .
The houses along the marsh area ranged from fishing shacks to very nice homes
 .
Captain Russ took his seat and we were off and running again
 .
Along the way, Captain Russ did some fancy piloting showing us how the boat handles on the butter-flat water
 .
He skimmed along one of the Mangrove stands to scare us up some birds
We hadn't gone far before we spotted our first dolphins.
 .
The marker you see in the water there is marking the location of a crab pot. They have blue-crabs all over the place. The birds were amazing to watch. At one point, we rounded a corner and found ourselves blazing straight for about two-dozen Egrets
 .
And then, we cleared the majority of the barrier islands where we found the place where the water and the sky become one
 .

I mean, really pretty!
To the north, we could see dozens of boats on the horizon. Captain Russ said they were diving for Scallops out there
 .
The water in The Gulf is very clean
 .
We drifted for quite a way just watching the fish and turtles swim under the boat. At one point, Captain Russ "parked" us over an underwater cave where the fish like to congregate. It was amazing.
Next, we approached what appeared to be an island only to discover that it was just taller Mangroves and there was no land directly under them
There were lots and lots of birds. I'll let Betty Boop tell you what kinds there were. The only name I remember was pelicans.
BBCK decided this was a perfect opportunity for a self portrait

When we started up again, the birds all spooked and took off, again
 .

Heading back in now...
Just before we reached the barrier islands, we encountered a pod of dolphins that were quite curious about us
 .
All done and back where we started
 .

In the afternoon, we let BBCK go play with her aunt and we met them for lunch about 1/2 way between her house and the 'rents' house.
