Coach BizB
2007-08-26
Saturday, I attended the CYO Coaching Certification class. I am now an official coach!

I can't say that I ever envisioned myself as a coach. It's not something that I aspired to be. It's not something that I would have sought out for myself. However, I believe that I have found a good friend in Coach TD and I enjoy helping him. We share the same frustrations with our girls when it comes to running. To wit, both of us have athletes who could perform above their current commitment to the sport. Coach TD's eldest daughter could be the #2 or #3 runner each week. Bubbles could easily perform in the sub 9-minute range. Neither of us know how to address this.

Any way, Saturday morning, I got up at 8:00 and had my coffee and a bagel before heading over to Maumee St. Joe's for the scheduled 9:00 certification class. I wasn't sure where to park, but it wasn't too difficult to figure out. After securing my kiteboarding gear in the back seat (it had been in the bed,) I made my way into the back entrance. There, the dozen or so people that I walked in with were greeted by three ladies attending a six-foot folding table.
"Are you already registered?" asked one of them.
"Yes," was my single word reply.
"Name?" she inquired.
After I informed her, she handed me a name tag.
"You'll need to wear this today. When the class is over, you'll be returning it to get your lanyard."

I accepted the sticker and applied it to my Red Sky Toledo kiteboarding shirt. She directed me down the stairs to the community room. Inside, there were 12 rows of tables with and about 150 chairs. I chose a seat on the left side of the room facing away from the door where I entered. That way, my left ear would be facing the speaker podium. There were four ladies sitting at my table and a bearded gentleman sitting to my right. As soon as I sat, he struck up a conversation.

"I'm Rick from SomeChurchName."
"Pete from Bubbles's school/church."
"Oh, how is Fr. Dan?"
"Ok."
"Do you know if he's out of the hospital yet?"
I must have had that look on my face that told him that I had no idea why Fr. Dan was in the hospital because he continued, "It was a heart attack... like 2 months ago, right?"
"Oh! Yeah... My daughter just said something about him the other day. I don't remember what her news was, though."
Then, Rick went on to tell me all about how he knew Fr. Dan really well from his old parish.

YAWN

Coach BizB Luckily, that's about the time that Jeff started the class. I certainly didn't need to further display the fact that I'm not the most regular church attendee and that I had little knowledge of the goings on at the church.

The class was informative and they kept it really close to the schedule. We were treated to Subway subs for lunch and they even did that in a really polished way. We lined up with the forms that we had already filled out and we turned in those forms as our meal ticket. They had a table all set up with the subs, chips, cookies, condiments and napkins. Then, off to the side, they had pre-poured enough sodas to go around. Coach BizBCoach BizB There was only one kind of sub, so there wasn't any time wasted deciding which flavor to grab. The only real choice was between three different kinds of chips and cola vs non-cola for the drink. There may have been diet, too. I wasn't really paying attention to that. I saw a guy pouring from a Pepsi 2-liter bottle and I grabbed my soda from the area where he placed his newly poured cup.

Coach BizB Mmmmm cookie.

Of course, it wasn't nearly as good as the delicious home made cookie that Tal brought me last weekend.

I was hoping to escape the requirement of the afternoon session, the topic of which was something that I had already attended in 2003. It turned out that I was required to attend, though. Damn. The wind was escaping through the ticks of the clock and there was no way for me to harness it for later use. As soon as the class ended, we exited through the same door where we had earlier entered. We turned in our name stickers and were given our coaches' lanyard in exchange.

I bolted for the truck and did a quick mental inventory of the gear that I had packed. Damn! I had forgotten my board-shorts! This momentary setback further ensured that I would get no use of the day's wind. Undaunted, I stopped home, grabbed my missing gear, and made my way to Maumee Bay via the usual route.
Once there, I scoped out the scene. Vic was out on the water with one other windsurfer that I didn't recognize. The Traveler was walking his gear back up to the parking area. Vic and the unknown windsurfer, who later turned out to be Andrew, were lit up and having a blast. Checking the sky, it was obvious that some wet weather was about to roll over us, so I waited in the truck for it to pass. Once it had passed, I pumped up my 12 meter kite in hopes that the wind following this little front would fill in and keep my happy. It didn't. I wasn't.

Coach BizBMark showed up just as I was walking my lines and we chatted for a bit while I continued in my self-denial about the current wind conditions. Hell, even if I couldn't go ride, at least I could mount my new waterproof video camera on the kite and play around with that. In the end, that's what I did.

Saturday night, Coach TD came over and we sat and chatted for a little more than an hour. It was great. I had invited him over because he was in need of some computer help and I was in need of $25 for the DVD burner that I won in a Photoshop contest. It occurred to me after he left that I haven't had a friend over - because I haven't really had a friend - since Scott moved out of the house next door. Hold your pity... It was by design. It turns out that Coach TD is a NASCAR fan, too. Since I don't have cable, we kind of kept our eye on the NASCAR.com leaderboard ticker as we chatted. The race at Bristol is much better to watch, really. Coach TD, you're welcome to come over any time.

Today was much of the same. I arrived at MBSP at 9 am and rigged my kite. Ryan showed up shortly after that. He pumped up his 20 meter kite and, while he wasn't riding enough to actually call it a session, he did get a ride in. I didn't. He and Mark had a lesson scheduled and the wind died so quickly that they didn't even get the lesson in. The forecast looks bad for the next 7 days, too. We need some hurricane byproduct winds. Can you send some tropical storms ashore, please?

The toe feels much better. Now, after CC practice, I can get away without taking a Tylenol. Though, I prefer to take a couple.

Got the birthday cards. Thank you. Why two, though? You didn't send me two and BigBro none, did you?

BigBro, we're still running on Monday if you're interested in joining us. And Saturday, 9/1 at 10:30 a.m. - same place.

Biz, Got your game ready to rock for tomorrow? Cooler means faster! We've also got parent info night which Adele will handle for the most part. This is where she earns her paycheck. We should pow wow with the other coaches about your idea for group encouragement and post race water. Excellent!

Way to go Big Bro!!! You could possible get some courses on line. the next thing is what will be your major. If you persue engineering then I would expect you would need a doctrate to prevent being outsourced.
Just who would be inputting the cyber space stuff? Your ace in the hole is your ability to see things in many planes ie : hip and valley etc, a plus in design concepts.

I now have the win TV working and I have lots of learning to do which I enjoy. Now to make some Miss M DVD's

Ok. You've seen the darkness at the end of the tunnel as have I. The question is, what are you going to do about it?

Think about it.

If we trained people right now it would take 5-10 years before they were experianced enough to attract overseas contract work.

I'll be replaced by a computer within 10 years anyway. Entire buildings will be built in cyberspace. No need to draw a picture when all the info is integrated into a single model.

"cyber space is the place for me" sung to the tune for "green acres"

The only problem with the circle coming back around is that we no longer have trained personnel in many fields ie. Big Bros field etc.

Try a carrot on a stick or a bunny running along side, thats how they get greyhounds to run.

Sometimes I say things that strike me as poignant. This is one of them:

Re: Gonzales resignation -
"If political capital could be borrowed and repaid with interest, the Bush administration would have doubled the national debt by now."

The only tropical storms I want to hear about are going to be in the south China seas!! My insurance will likely triple this year so I will most likely have to downgrade my coverage. Whatever I do wont cover what I own and all this is due to the weather terrorists predictions of a stormier season than last two years, and the greed of the insurance companies.
So forget about tropical storms, besides Findley couldn't take another flooding.
