39 Seconds 2007-09-06 |
At today's cross country practice, we did time trials in preparation for this weekend's season opener race. Before we started the timed run, we had all the kids lined up in starting-box formation (crammed into a space that's about 6' wide X 12' deep.) As we stood there listening to coach td's most excellent instructions, Bubbles said, "Dad, give me a goal." "Nine minutes." I said thinking that was a great goal given that her best time last year was 9:02. She replied, "No, I mean tell me who I should try to keep up with." I told her to keep up with either of the twins.
I started out running behind the entire group and quickly passed kids until I had even passed Bubbles. At the first turn, she caught back up to me and ran with me the rest of the way. She was cramping. She couldn't breathe through her nose because she has a cold. She was even wheezing when she breathed through her mouth.
By the time we got back around to the top of the hill, she was running with tears running down her cheeks. I told her she needn't keep up with me, but bless her little heart, she did. She stayed with me right to the last 100 feet or so when I sprinted for the finish line. I'm pretty sure she sprinted, too. However, my sprint is considerably faster than hers. When I crossed the finish line, coach td called out, "8:20".
It didn't register.
Three seconds later, Bubbles crossed the finish line and coach td called out, "8:23". Then, it registered. I screamed in so much excitement that my dentures almost popped out of my mouth, "OH NO YOU DIDN'T!"
She took 39 seconds off her BEST race time last year. She was in tears and she was having trouble regaining her composure, but by God, she kicked butt!
On the drive home, I told her that if that was the fastest time she posts all season, I'll still be just as proud. I did tell her that I'd like to see that kind of time in a race when it counts for the team, but either way, I'm quite proud. |
