Tonight was the first night of the Summer Fun Runs program for 2008. We had a great turn out and and we had lots of fun! It started out with Coach TD giving a great little talk about our need for the kids to follow directions and reminding everyone to check Summer Fun Runs for updates and schedule information. We had about 25 kids and 10 parents who stayed for the whole thing. After Coach TD's talk, we did a warm up run and then Coach Hunt did a little strength exercise with everyone.

The bigger kids went on the green trail at Swan Creek while the smaller/slower kids just stayed in the meadow and did one lap. Coach TD set up a quick little relay game by the time everyone got back and then he released them to me.

While we walked over to the area where the final game was set up, I explained that we were going to play an American Gladiators type of game. The goal of the kids was to run to each of three different stations. At two of the stations, there were water weapons for the kids to use on us coaches. The first station was just a tree to hide behind. The second station had a basket full of water balloons. The third station had big one-shot squirt guns (like the ones we had at the pool in Florida). While the kids were running from station to station, two coaches were throwing water-soaked sponges at them. One coach, me, was positioned between station one and station two for the kids. They got to throw the water balloons at me while I tried to hit them with dripping wet sponges. Then, a girl who couldn't run today was stationed near the finish line taking the place of one of the coaches. Some kids squirted her with the water-sticks while she tried to hit them with sponges, some decided to backtrack and squirt me with the water-sticks. The ones that got me REALLY got me because I was focused on the kids running the first two stations. Everyone got to go through at least once. Most went through the gauntlet twice or three times. EVERYONE had a blast. The other coaches and some of the kids, including Bubbles were running around grabbing and returning the sponges that we had launched at the contenders.

When the game was over, I told them to use up the last of the water balloons and meet me at the top of the hill for some stretching. I think we got everyone out of there on time. If not, it was close. I didn't have a watch, but I didn't hear anyone complain about taking too long.

Wednesday is bring-a-friend night and Pizza-party night! This is going to be a fun summer of running and friends!

Great topic. I am sure you understand why dad & I could not discuss "one thing you would change" subject. Perhaps we were not alone there - but that was before you came along, so you are forgiven. Don't take the site off - It gives me another thing to do on the computer every day. I have to see who has not written again!!

The Gemini coaster turned THIRTY YEARS OLD today! *shudder*

I'll never forget the first ride. Hey... there's an idea for a topic on the family site. Now, if I could just get everyone to participate. I'm tempted to just pull the site down and use it just for the email addresses.

Maybe the best game to date Biz, great job.
Her name is Sarah and she left her inhaler at home today. She is the bravest girl (outside of childbirth and war)I know. She was on J-Peeps soccer team and took 2 balls kicked to the face in 1 game at point blank range and went back in both times. She also came out and participated at our recent American Cancer Relay for Life. I want Sarah to run cross country but I really want Sarah to want to run cross country. That would be very cool. For her to run and race all season would rate up there with anything I've been involved with as a coach. No joke. She would be a huge inspiration for all of her teammates. I will not push her but I will encourage her and her little brother with to keep coming to our fun runs and we'll see.
