Coach TD picked me up at around 2 and we made our way to Pburg for the race. He kept the conversation light and we really didn't talk about the run that much at all. That was good. I was nervous enough after reading his email that detailed what the race-day was going to involve. After we registered and got our tee shirts, we went back to the van and changed before doing a nice little warm-up run. Then, we stretched and did a couple of short sprints before making our way to the start-line. The race: There couldn't have been any more than 70 people at this race. Most of the participants were kids. I think the only thing that Coach TD said to me at the start-line was, "Let the kids go. You'll pass them soon enough." He may have said more, but I think that was the most important thing for me to remember. Most of the kids took off like they were running a 100 yard dash. I stepped right into the same cadence that we had when we ran last Monday. Or, what felt like the same cadence any way. After the first turn, I asked the guy running next to me what his goal time was. He said it was 25:15. That's just 15 seconds slower than my goal, I thought to myself. I pointed to my chest and back to him and then back to my chest. He gave me the thumbs up. At the first mile marker, they had someone calling out our split-times.
7:53
"Damn! That's too fast!" I said to my running partner. He said, "nahhh, I feel good." We continued at the same pace/cadence until the next turn - probably 1/4 mile from the mark. Then, I slowed noticeably. So did he. This guy's foot hit the ground so hard with each step that I wasn't able to concentrate on listening to my own body and I was hoping to put some space between us so that I could concentrate on what my body was trying to tell me. When we approached the 2-mile mark, another runner was catching up to us and he said, "Please tell me you two are about to fade." I responded, "Only if by 'fade' you mean move over so that you can run through." He said, "I'm about to take the 'jump-on-somebody-and-ride-their-back-strategy'." "Is that legal?" "It's a race, everything goes." I motioned for him to pass me and said, "Get up there so that I can jump on." I'm sure all this talking added to the increased time that the second mile took, but it was fun and funny so I'm ok with that.
16:06 ...was the call from the guy at the 2-mile marker. I couldn't do the math. My brain was too busy telling me all the great reasons to stop this nonsense. It hurtsIt's not fun right nowIt hurtsListen to how hard you're breathing. That's not right. It hurts. It was just past this 2-mile mark where I decided to push the pace a little. I put my running mate behind me and then slowed to the same pace that I had been running before. He didn't catch up. He never caught up. He did gain some ground, but not a lot. When I turned the next to last corner, I looked over my shoulder and he was still a good 30 feet or more behind me. When I reached my pre-determined mark (a telephone pole that I spotted from the start-line,) I kicked it in and began my one-breath/one-step acceleration. By the last corner, I had just enough to go to a full-on sprint. I passed one other runner as I rounded that last corner and saw Coach TD standing at the finish. He said to the time-keeper, "Just call it out!"
24:27! ...was what I heard. I couldn't believe it. In fact, later, I was convinced that they had said 24:47. However, Coach TD and I eventually went over and looked at the record-sheet to verify the time. It was, in fact, 24:27.I've now got two weeks, or about 12 workouts until the next race on 11/15. Then, I'll probably join Coach TD for the Holiday Hustle in December. If I'm going to do that, though, I need to get a stand for the bike so that I can train indoors when it's cold. |
BizB Fri Nov 14 11:28:01 AM Hey 'rents...
BigBro pointed out to me that GMail now has voice/video chat. If you already have a gmail account, you can install the voice/video capability by clicking the link at the top right of the gmail inbox-page. After you have it installed, we can use video chat in a much easier way than we were with Skype.
I've already used it twice with some of my friends. It works great.
If you need help with this, give me a ring tonight and I'll do ya right. Reply |
Betty Boop Wed Nov 12 12:15:05 PM Big Bro - we rec'd your mail yesterday. Thanks Reply |
Betty Boop Wed Nov 12 09:58:30 AM A beautiful day here in God's waiting room today. There is a nice breeze from the south not but later, it is predicted that a cold front will move in from the NW to end our lovely weather.
POPS had to see the bone man on Monday as his lt. knee hurt - nothing but scar tissue and was "given" a knee brace. It feels better now.
I saw Changling yesterday which was powerful and made me thankful that nothing like that happened to any of us.
Last night I had a chat with 'fer and #1. I can't begin to imagine how much she will talk as a teenager if this continues. It is so fun to chat with her though and she is doing much better. Reply |
BizB Wed Nov 12 09:53:46 AM So it would appear that BigBro and Froggy don't read the family site.
Froggy sure reads facebook. Perhaps I'll poke her in the ribs over there. Reply |
BizB Tue Nov 11 08:07:21 PM Not in a very long time, no. October 25th was the last time. It has been the worst fall since I started kiteboarding. Worse, it's at least part my fault. I took every-other-weekend as a 4-day weekend through Oct and Nov. That had to have shut off the wind a bit. Then, to make it worse, Mark bought new gear in September. That's bound to kill the wind, too. Reply |
taz Tue Nov 11 07:45:11 PM Hey bro I haven't heard any kite talk for awhile have you been out on the water lately????

BizB Sun Nov 09 02:35:45 PM I can't think of anything, pops. They are 2 different types of images. The smilies are .gif files and the phone pics are .jpg files. They are both links to javascript functions (when you click on them, it fires a javascript call) but, so are all the other pictures on my site that pop-up into different windows.
They are all hosted here, on bizb.biz, so there's nothing special about where they're stored.
What browser are you using?
Does the same thing happen if you use a different browser? Reply |

BizB Fri Nov 07 10:15:43 PM I don't think that has anything to do with it. Check your browser settings and make sure everything looks ok there. Not that I can think of anything in particular that you would look for. Maybe you'll know it when you see it? Reply |

Had trouble sleeping on my left side last night - I know - poor me! Other than that my labs were all good and BP - great - etc. All I need now is my annual mammogram in Dec. and I'm good to go. sopops Wed Nov 05 06:26:01 PM WE BOTH VOTED FOR A DREAM, A PASSING FANCY THAT WILL NOT OCCUR. i'M NOT YELLING the caps lock is on. the CHANGE CAN ONLY COME IF WE can somehow get rid of the lobbyist and the pork in government by allowing the line item veto. Neither the folks you voted for or the others can accomplish this and it would take a change far deeper than is allowed by our electoral system

BizB Wed Nov 05 11:24:57 AM My vote went for Bob Barr, not Bush-lite. Not only would the LP pull out of Afghanistan and Iraq, but they'd bring our military home from most (if not all) foreign permanent bases.
I voted for smaller government.
I voted for reduced spending.
I voted for states' rights.
I voted for honoring the constitution.
I voted for personal liberty.
I voted for personal responsibility.
I voted for personal property rights.
I voted for personal reward and personal risk, not personal reward and public risk.
I voted for free trade.
I voted against the welfare state.
I voted against continued foreign aid during a time when our country is borrowing money to keep our liberty alive.

What was it that you voted for?
Nationalized healthcare?
Continued socialization of risk with privatized rewards?
Government sponsored education for everyone regardless of ability?
Mandated public funded education with no competition?
The belief that government is the solution rather than the problem?

Betty Boop Wed Nov 05 10:39:08 AM I wasn't and am not looking for handouts. I an looking for stability in government in Washington. That is certainly lacking now. Don't think we all won't be paying for these wars for generations to come. Did you think of that? 10 billion a month - come on son! Reply |
BizB Wed Nov 05 08:03:07 AM I hope you get the handouts that you were looking for when you voted for Obama. I'll be paying for them. 'fer will be paying for them. Bubbles will be paying for them. Things 1 & 2 will be paying for them...

BizB Mon Nov 03 07:55:59 AM This would certainly explain some of why my second mile took longer. Their mark was a bit off. It was about 20 feet from the one mile mark instead of 200 feet. Coach TD's second mile was his 'slow' mile, too.

BizB Sun Nov 02 06:56:45 PM Coach TD, it just hit me that you finished 14th and your time was 22:14. I finished 27th and my time was 24:27. Was that what you tried to point out as we turned in our sticks? Reply |
