Catch up - Kite + Camp
2009-05-12
I've been a little slack in my updates, lately. Let's start with way back on April 24 when I met up with the regular crew for an afternoon of kiteboarding. It was perfect conditions for my 9 meter kite. After pumping up and launching I wasted no time getting airborn. I had completed several jumps and each one was getting higher and higher. Then, I jumped for the last time on that kite. I stalled the kite when I landed* the jump and she fell back in the wind window. Then she fell out of the air and did so with her nose to the water and her back to the wind. Then, a gust filled her up and took the slack from the lines. My face emerged from the water just in time to watch my 2006 9-meter Best Yarga hit the water at mach 4.

She ripped.

She ripped from nose to tail.

She ripped from nose to tail in not one spot, but two.

I contemplated getting her fixed. I even took her over to Quantum Sails to get an estimate. They quoted me "Under $120.00". Or, under 2 hours of work. While that sounded reasonable and did give them the go ahead to make the repair, I knew in my heart that she would never fly the same again. She already has one repair from last season.

The next morning, Tuesday, I called Mark at Red Sky and asked him to keep his eyes open for deals on close-out kites from the 2008 model year. The next morning, he sent me an email telling me that I could get an Eclipse Nano 9-meter for $599.00. That's a steal in anybody's book. I told him to order me one and I called Quantum to cancel the repair.

The following Thursday, she arrived. She's pretty.

I got a chance to fly her last Saturday in the gusty (zero to 40 mph) winds. At first it was frustrating because it's a different style of kite and you have to do different things to get it going. After a short time, I was comfortable on the new kite and I was throwing jumps again. Big, floaty, hang in the air all day jumps. I like her. I think I'll keep her.

OMG CUTE!

That's Bubbles youngest sister

Monday, Bubbles left for 6th grade camp. It was supposed to be my week with her so it does feel a little empty around here. But, I go through that every other week, so it's not such a big deal. They didn't know who they would get to share a cabin with until they arrived so we don't know if Bubbles and PowerFoot got to share a room. They did put eachother down as preferred choice for room mates. So, chances are good.

I hope they have fun.

*landed: In this case, I mean that I came back down and touched the water. It was not graceful.

We have upside down weather maps. It is 65 in Homosassa and 82 at Lake Erie. What is up with that?

We have had rain for 3 days and for 2 more to come. I need sunshine!!

I must have pumped it up too hard. That's the exact same place that it ripped last may. I don't know if the repair failed or if it failed somewhere else along the leading edge.

I had pumped it up and walked my lines. Then I went over to grab my board and POP! Luckily, my 17 meter kite wasn't too big and I got in a couple of hours any way.

And, you've got three too-many zeros in there, BigBro. It would cost $4.0e13 or $40 Trillion.

I didn't want to be the wet blanket. Since BigBro already peed in the Wheaties, I'll add this.

The cost for the plan would be

40,000,000,000,000,000

40 quadrillion dollars

if you were to stack a dollar bill 40 quadrillion times it would reach 6.3 Million miles, or 250 times around the earth. Thats a lot of money...

I say go for it, but wait about 2 years, 4 months and 18 days give or take a couple....

I will vote for that plan. It sounds excellent to me.

Dear Mr. President:
Please find below my suggestion for fixing America's economy.
Instead of giving billions of dollars to companies that will squander the money on lavish parties and unearned bonuses, use the
following plan.
You can call it the Patriotic Retirement Plan:
There are about 40 million people over 50 in the work force.
Pay them 1 million apiece severance for early retirement with the
following stipulations:
1) They MUST retire. Forty million job openings -
Unemployment fixed.
2) They MUST buy a new American CAR. Forty million cars ordered-
Auto Industry fixed.
3) They MUST either buy a house or pay off their mortgage -
Housing Crisis fixed.
It can't get any easier than that!
If more money is needed, have all members of Congress and their constituents pay their taxes...

I had the same intentions , but the body kept telling me differently and the last 9 years have compounded the fast decline, like Betty said enjoy it while you can!!!

I surely hope Bubbles has a great week. She is so sweet, she brings tears to my heart cause I don't get to hug her. It looks like she wears her glasses all the time now, right?

I think your new kite looks nice - We should be able to spot it in pictures now. Enjoy the ride now, while you are able.We are sure happy we have our sailing memories to keep us smiling from time to time.
