Vibram 5 Fingers 2009-10-11 |
Since last August when I started running with the goal of racing in 5K races, I've been running using the Pose Method. The short version of what Pose running means is that you run on the balls of your feet. It's the art of falling forward, or translating gravity into forward motion.
This is how you would run if you weren't wearing shoes. Heel striking is something that only leads to injuries and I wanted to avoid injuries at all cost. Since my heels never touch the ground when I run, I don't need running shoes. And, since it's basically running barefoot, I thought I'd invest in some running shoes that are practically barefoot shoes.
They arrived on Friday. Diz was interested, too.
The box felt VERY light when I picked it up. I couldn't imagine how there could be shoes in there.
I ordered the camo-blue version and I like the way they look, a lot.
I mentioned that they were light. Both shoes together weigh less than a pound.
So, with toenails freshly trimmed, I slid my foot into them for the first time.
They felt weird, at first. Then, I realized I had my little toe stuffed in with the next toe over. After I fixed that, they felt really good.
I ran my warm up run on Saturday with them. It was uncomfortable at first, but that should be expected. The good news is that the muscles that felt sore were the same muscles that would ache after a good long run. So, I'm comforted in the thought that after I strengthen those muscles, I'll be able to run in the Vibram 5-Fingers with no pain. |

BizB Sat Oct 17 01:09:48 PM She's feeling much better. She coughed a little during the night, but less than I expected.
The Vibrams are great so far. I did two 1/2 mile runs in them before committing myself to a real run in them. The first run was 3.7 miles on grass. They felt good for the duration and I had no pain immediately after or the nex day. Thursday, I ran 4 miles in them - on pavement. The only complaint I had that night was that my feet got cold. By the 3 mile mark, I felt like I was slapping the pavement with cold steaks, not feet. Friday and this morning, my calves hurt. It's not as bad as the day I overdid the hill-work, but still uncomfortable. Reply |

BizB Fri Oct 16 12:07:08 PM Bubbles went to school today. She called at 10:30 and 12:00 saying that she didn't feel well. since she wasn't throwing up and had no fever, I told her to suck it up and stay at school. Reply |
coach td Thu Oct 15 09:49:11 AM Over 100 is about 20% as there's just over 500 enrolled. Tons of sick kids and families scrambling like Biz. My wife is sick now and both my kids were sick last week although all with cold like symptoms. Bubbles couldn't make it to the cross country banquet but Biz was the microphone man. He was in charge of door prizes and as always he put his twist on it. Oddly enough we had a great turn out. I think as much of each family showed as possible. I thought they would all stay home but not the case. My camera battery croaked and my phone pics stink but we did have 120 plus for the gig. Cross country is over and now it's time. Reply |
Betty Boop Thu Oct 15 08:04:54 AM Chicken soup is in order. Now, don't laugh at me - it works. We have a friend here who makes it the best I've ever had but even Progresso in the can is great. IT WILL HELP. Tell her granny sends love. Reply |
BizB Wed Oct 14 08:54:32 PM Second confirmed case of H1N1 at Bubbles' school. Over 100 kids absent today with whatever it is that's going around.
Bubbles has been out of school since Monday at noon. I'm keeping her home tomorrow because she still has a 100.3 temp. They've instituted a 24 hour afebrile rule. And, while 100.3 isn't technically over the 38C temp that's considered feverish, I'm keeping her home because she's suffering lots of other symptoms. She has a sore throat, runny nose, cough and generally upset belly. Reply |
BizB Tue Oct 13 07:47:06 PM She's still feverish. No throwing-up, but her stomach has been queezy at times during the day.
Since they have a confirmed case of H1N1 at her school, they've implemented a 24 hour no-fever rule, so she'll be home from school again tomorrow. Reply |
Betty Boop Tue Oct 13 10:48:50 AM How is Bubbles feeling today? Hope it is not the flu.
Curly certainly is a big girl now with pretty earrings. Hope she has good luck with them. Poor Bubbles has had her problems with them, right? Reply |
BigBro Mon Oct 12 11:28:13 AM I had a pair of army boots that I bought that had Vibram soles. They were the most comfortable boot I've ever worn. Expensive but very nice. Reply |
