coach td Wed Dec 23 12:36:43 PM Didn't know Peter Frampton's gig was so far away. BigBro don't worry about this coming summer. Just put your head down and get a few weeks of work outs under your belt. The rest will come. Give it 4 weeks and then let's talk again. ? Reply |
BigBro Wed Dec 23 12:31:46 PM I don't think I'll be running any races until summer at the rate I've been set for pushing my self, but I can live with that. Reply |
BizB Wed Dec 23 12:17:39 PM If he wasn't living/working in Lansing Michigan, I would definitely work out with him. Of course, if he wasn't working/living in Lansing Michigan while is wife is still here, he wouldn't have taken on this challenge that I issued to him as an off-the-cuff comment...
"Hey, when you're up there in Lansing all alone with nothing to do in the evenings, you should do some running... get in shape and then do a race or two with me!" Reply |
coach td Wed Dec 23 11:34:36 AM All good stuff Biz. It's rewarding to teach but it takes a receptive student to complete the circle. Big bro is asking, listening and accepting. It's half the battle. Way to go, bro(s). About the only addition would be one work out together to get all the little pluses and minuses you'd like to pass on as well. Reply |

BigBro Wed Dec 23 09:58:21 AM how long do you think I should hold the planks to start with? Reply |
BizB Wed Dec 23 09:55:01 AM I hate them. That's why I do them! My core-workout routine includes:
Plank
Left Side Plank
Right Side Plank
Elbow-to-knee crunches
Leg-lifts (I hold for 10 seconds)
Push ups
Windshield wipers
Pelvic Dips 4 point
Pelvic Dips 3 point (leg up)
Pelvic Dips 3 point (hand up)
With the exercise ball:
Leg curls
Hip extensions

BigBro Wed Dec 23 09:25:10 AM the trouble with starting is going from nothing to something, is an infinite amount of change. Thanks for the advise and the exercise tips. What do you think about side planks as an exercise. I've seen all kinds of variations on these. Reply |
BizB Wed Dec 23 08:25:00 AM When did it start hurting? Did it hurt the first time you ran? The second?
Don't try to progress too quickly. The tendons/ligaments take some time to get used to the abuse of a new exercise.
The general rule is to add no more than 10% per week to your routine.
Start with something that you can handle; some amount of exercise time that doesn't cause pain. Since you've already reached the pain level, I'd say back off a bit. Then, the next week, add 10% to the amount of time that you're exercising. For example, if you ran for 20 minutes the first week (not 20 minutes a day... 20 minutes a week would be a good starting point,) then the second week, you can run for 22 minutes. The third week, run for 24 minutes. The fourth week, run for 26.5 minutes, and so on. Before you know it, you'll be running 30 miles a week.
Meanwhile, on days that you're not running, exercise those tendons by doing ankle strengthening exercises. One of our favorites is to stand on the ball of one foot with the other foot about 6 inches off the ground in front of you. Then, pretending the foot that's in the air is holding a pen between your toes, spell out the alphabet in the air. This accomplishes two things. 1) It strengthens the foot that's doing the work of holding you up in a way that transfers directly to the act of Pose running. 2) It increases range of motion and strength of the foot that's doing the spelling exercise.
Search YouTube for additional ankle exercises. There are lots that you can try.
coach td Any additional thoughts? You've been swimming in much deeper water at this end of the pool than I have. Reply |
BigBro Wed Dec 23 07:13:22 AM balls of the foot - yes
pain after stopping - yes
mostly pain in the top outside of ankle joint, a little in the bottom of the heal.
running shoes - yes
stretch - yes Lunge - no
I have a feeling the pain is in the tendons at the top of the ankle. I've always had weak ankles, turning them regularly when I was running and in shape. That's why I could never ice skate. That and finding skates to fit the width of my honking wide feet.

BizB Tue Dec 22 09:26:17 PM I have a pose drill video that I can share with you (avi format). Let me know if you want to have a look. It's quality stuff. Reply |
BizB Tue Dec 22 09:19:58 PM Don't land on your toes. Land on the balls of your feet. Check out this site Pose Running.
You should be experiencing sore calves, and that's about it for muscle pain. When you say joint pain in your ankles, is it pain that stays around after you stop, or simply discomfort while you're running?
Does it go away when you stop?
Are you wearing running shoes?
Do you stretch first?
If so: Does your stretch include a lunge type stretch? Reply |

BigBro Tue Dec 22 07:45:14 PM I've been "running" (run, jog, walk, shake well and repeat) a half mile loop in and around the apartment complex. I'm getting better at keeping my wind, but taking it slowly as far as pushing myself. Tonight makes 4 times in the last 6 days (I didn't run this weekend while home).
Should I be worried about joint pain in my ankles. I'm trying to land on my toes and hitting my heal on each step. Reply |

BizB Fri Dec 18 07:51:29 AM b33nz! - long time no see (my fault).
I mentioned Bicon to my dentist and told him I was on the list to participate in a demo procedure, but he wasn't interested in trying a new brand. He's very particular about his work.
I texted you with a "Happy Thanksgiving". Don't know if you got it or not.

BizB Wed Dec 16 08:34:33 AM I feel like I'm at about 90%. All my questions were answered and then some. The adjustment that they made allowed me to wear the lower denture for a few hours before I developed another sore spot. Yesterday, at noon, I went back in to get that sore spot taken care of. I was able to wear the denture for the rest of the day. I put it in first thing this morning, and it feels really good.
I'll take a pic or two this evening and post an update either here or on the family site. I want to sing the praises of Westgate Dental Arts so I plan to write up something nice. Reply |
