I pulled into my driveway at 3pm on Sunday and saw a dog in my driveway. As I pulled in, it ran toward the garage. Between the garage and the house is my deck. There's really no place for the dog to go.
I let st00pid out of the car and told her, "Find 'em." which she is really good at - being part Chow. She ran directly to the back of the driveway and stood there sniffing the air. The dog was gone.
I walked back and looked under the deck and there was this little dog curled up under the deck shivering. So, I put st00pid inside and grabbed a couple of dog biscuits. I gave her one by tossing it under the deck. After she was done with that, I held up the other one and made her come get it - without making her come out from under the deck.
She let me pet her while she ate the biscuit. After a moment, she slunk back under the deck where I couldn't reach. I went back in and got a handful of st00pid's dog food and repeated the process drawing her all the way out from under the deck. She stood there letting me pet her until I tried to scruff her and then she nipped at me (totally expected).
She wasn't wearing a collar or tags of any sort. I repeated the process but this time I had st00pid's choker chain in my hand. When I got the chain around her neck, she was completely happy to follow me anywhere.
I took her in the house and put her in st00pid's cage. She went in with no argument. I went and grabbed a bowl of water and put it in there with her. While she sipped, my cat went over and took a drink at the same time from the same bowl. The stray didn't flinch.
She didn't care at all that there was a strange cat sharing her water bowl. I put a full measuring cup of food in a bowl and put that in the cage, too. She ate about 1/4 cup and then left it. She was covered in fleas and she had chewed away a lot of her hair on her back.
Her vag area was inflamed or maybe engorged, I couldn't tell for sure which was the case. I couldn't tell if she just had pups or was about to have some, or if it was from the fleas.
She wouldn't let me get a good look at her hind-quarters and I wasn't pushing the issue. I let her sleep for 1/2 hour or so and then I decided to walk her around the block and ditch her.
Since she wasn't hungry, I figured she'd eaten recently and somebody may be looking for her.
I took her around the block and removed the collar. Then, I stomped my feet and scared her away. She took off in one direction, and I took off in the other. I checked a few times on Sunday evening and she didn't return.
I went over to Sig's and spent the night on Sunday. Monday morning, when I returned to my house with a big smile on my face, she was back under the deck. She wouldn't come out to get a biscuit and I had to go to work, so I left her there.
I thought, maybe she'll get bored or cold or something and she won't be there when I get home from work.
No such luck.
She was WAAAAY under the deck and not even a little interested in coming out this time.
There was no way I would call the dog warden on her.
- It's a kill facility
- I don't have a license for my dog
- Fuck the government
Taz and Catlady suggested that I try warming some canned cat/dog food and placing that out there and then blocking off the access to the crawl space or whatever you want to call the 6 inches under the deck.
I blocked off all but about a foot of space under the deck so that if she did come out, I could completely block access. I put a paper plate out there with some cat food on it and just left it there. I didn't watch to see if she was going to take it. Thirty minutes later, it was gone - plate and all. I think she drug the plate under the deck.
The second plate of food I put out there was a regular dinner plate. I didn't want her to drag this one under the deck. I waited on the deck with a board ready to block the opening once she came out. About 30 seconds after I put it down, she came out. I reached for the board and she heard the swish of my sleeve on my coat and ducked back under.
DAMN!
I stood there with that board in my hand for 15 minutes waiting for her to come out again.
Fifteen minutes is a VERY long time.
Tired of standing there and bored out of my skull, I picked up the board and walked over to the far side of the deck - beyond where she had nested and I SLAMMED IT DOWN ON THE DECK OVER AND OVER AND OVER MOVING CLOSER AND CLOSER TO WHERE SHE LAY.
She ran out through the opening and scurried down the driveway. I never saw her again after that.
