Date Night 2010 included dinner at Smokey Bones, and Wicked at The Stranahan Theater. We got to Smokey Bones at shortly after 6pm and had Rockstar Parking right near the door. We didn't have to wait for a table and we were seated at a lovely booth overlooking the parking lot and the hotel nextdoor. Or, it would have overlooked those things if the shades weren't drawn. About our only disappointment of the night was the missing spinach artichoke dip from the menu. We made due with some soft pretzels and dipping sauce, instead.
Bubbles had a loaded baked potato and I had a beef brisket sandwich - of which I hate half. The food was yummy, I just wanted to save some for today's dinner. At some point during dinner, I realized that Smokey Bones doesn't like gay people. Well, they don't like big hairy gay people. Look... they even have a sign . During dinner, we heard the roar of rain on the roof, so I opened up the blinds and we watched it pour while we shared a baked-apple sundae . When we finished eating, I went and got the car and picked up Bubbles at the door, as any good date would. This is a learning experience after all. It was still pouring down rain when we got to the theater at 7:25. Luckily, I had an umbrella in the car. Bubbles offered to climb into the back of the car to grab it and then she entertained me with her attempts to open it. At one point, she had it open IN THE CAR! With a little instruction, she now knows how to stick the umbrella out the top of the door frame and open it before fully opening the door. I walked in the rain from the car to the sidewalk before I convinced Bubbles to share it with me. The wind was driving the rain at an angle so fitting my 6'2" frame and her 4'11" frame under the same umbrella and keeping us both dry was... challenging. We managed.
When we got into the lobby, we found the souvenir stand and picked up a $40 memento
. Then, we snapped a pic of Bubbles next to the poster and laughed at the people wearing ruby slippers .
When they let us into the theater, we were shown our seats by an usher. The seats were awesome. We were in row W on the floor near the center. The couple to our right were probably in their sixties. To our left, a group of younger girls. The oldest was probably in her late 20s, the youngest in her early teens. Behind them, over our left shoulder, were a group of middle age women. Directly in front of us, was fidget. More on that later. The women over my left shoulder were talking about an upcoming concert at the Lucas County Arena. It's the same concert that Sig wants to see on June 4th. Overhearing the, and having a shared interest, I piped in with some information about the concert that they didn't have. We talked about that concert and some of the concerts that they had attended. Bubbles piped in with her experiences at the LCA. After the conversation lulled, Bubbles and I took some time to examine the curtain in front of the stage and the huge dragon hovering over same. We tried to locate noteworthy locations on the map of Oz that adorned the curtain . Then, we talked briefly about the two guys who were stationed at the top of the scaffolding on either side of the stage . Each was wearing a reflective yellow vest. We deduced that they wore the yellow vest so that, if they fell during the show, 1) we would be able to see them fall which would undoubtedly add to the value of the show and, 2) they would be able to figure out which guy had fallen and needs to be taken to the hospital.
Fidget. Monkeys came out on the stage before the curtain went up and they were very animated and energetic. They jumped and hooted and whooped it up. They had NOTHING on Fidget. Eventually, one of the monkeys turned a crank which appeared to raise the curtain. That was Fidget's cue to fidget. This little girl in front of us was probably about 7 years old. She was sitting between her grandmother and her what appeared to be either an older sister or cousin. To the far right, sat her mother - her rather disconnected uninvolved mother from what I saw. Fidget must have eaten all of her Easter candy before the show. She was so hopped up on something that she couldn't sit still to save her life. She went from left to right in her seat moving from sitting Indian-style to kneeling. She went from sitting in her seat to sitting on her grandmother's lap, and then back to her seat. Repeat until intermission. Bubbles isn't a violent person, but I swear I saw her ball up a fist fully intending to punch her in the back of the head.
The show was absolutely amazing
After the show, our night was made complete by Bubbles running into someone that she knows. It happens any time we go anywhere. On the drive home, we discussed the lessons learned on this year's Date Night. Those lessons included If you've been dating for a while, it's always more fun to sit on the same side of the boothYour date should pull the car up to the door if it's rainingBe careful with your wardrobe (this part of the evening purposely absent from the story)Don't open the umbrella in the carIf you've only been dating for a short time, it's better to do the show first and then dinner after. That way, you don't have to talk to each other for the first part of the date, and once you are at dinner, you have something to talk about - the show you just saw.I think those were all of the lessons from this year. Bubbles, did I miss anything?
