Brake Check
2010-04-30
Because of the construction on The Anthony Wayne Trail, and I75 between The Trail and Wales Rd, it has taken me a lot longer to get to work lately. And, I tend to get frustrated with people who believe that their journey, whatever it may be, is much more important than my journey and that they have the right to do something rude or inconsiderate in order to get through the construction zone ahead of me. Lately, instead of dealing with the construction, I have tried alternate routes. On days that I don't have Bubbles, I've taken Western to Broadway and then crossed the river on the High Level Bridge and then double back to 65. The only problem with that course is on Broadway near The High Level where it seems that lots of other people who normally took The AWT into downtown are now using Broadway. Other than that it has been smooth sailing.

On weeks that I have Bubbles, I have played around with a couple of different options. Taking the trail to Glendale and then catching Broadway and the High Level is ok. Again, the congestion on Broadway is frustrating. One day last week, I took The AWT into Maumee and crossed the river on Dussel and then caught I475 to I75 getting off at Wales Rd. That worked out well. It is just as fast as my normal route even when there's no construction. Today, I was in no hurry to go to work - I may even take 1/2 day to go kiting - so I tried a variation on that route. I took The AWT into Maumee, crossed on the Maumee/Perrysburg bridge and then turned left at the light. That put me on Rt 65 which I took into Rossford. Rt 65 is 35 mph until you get through Perrysburg and then, after a stretch of 45 mph roadway, it drops back to 35 mph in Rossford. I kind of wish it was 35 mph the whole way because some of the most scenic views occur in the section with the higher speed. I really enjoyed looking out over the River as I made my way to work. There's just something calming about a view that includes water. My morning drive was actually putting me into a good mood.

Then, just before I got into Rossford, still in the 45 mph section, a blue Ford Escort turned right from a side-street onto Rt 65 in front of me. I didn't slow down, expecting the car to accelerate to the posted speed limit. Instead, I found myself closing the gap quickly. Then, just as I was moving my foot from the gas pedal to the brake in order to disengage the cruise control, the little #$@!%$# brake-checked me! My calm, happy mood vanished. Why the hell would you pull out in front of someone and fail to accelerate to the speed limit and then feel compelled to slam on your brakes when the car behind you gets close?

I yelled at him and flipped him off and then I followed the little bastard until he got nervous and made a third left hand turn at consecutive intersections. At the third left, I went straight and made my way to work. I hope that @#$%@^#$ caught my license plate and checks the site. I'd love for him to know why I was so pissed off at his brake-check. I'm more calm now, having vented.

Late afternoon, the showers started in the last 2 days and we have had nearly 5" of rain!!! The noise on the porch is wild! They say the same pattern seems to be on for us for the next several days, so we are back to the normal weather patterns of old. I know, yawn, yawn --- nothing more than weather but I am trying to communicate the only thing we have going on.

So excited to see Bubbles!! Duke will love having someone new to play with.

Happy Old Man
A woman walked up to a little old man rocking in a chair on his porch. "I couldn't help noticing how happy you look," she said. "What's your secret for a long happy life?" "I smoke three packs of cigarettes a day," he said. "I also drink a case of whiskey a week, eat fatty foods, and never exercise." "That's amazing," the woman said. "How old are you?' "Twenty-six!" he said.

Your experience in Rossford is an old trick some folks pull to involve you in an accident and get enough insurance money to get a new care and bread on the table, usually unemployed types.

SONS - thank you all for your Mother's Day wishes. They were all appreciated so much. I love all of you too. That goes for the grands too. I don't often talk to all of our kids in one day. My heart is happy.
