Oak Harbor 5K 2010-06-09 |
|
Tonight, I ran my first 5K in 18 months. The last race I ran, however, was the Frosty 5 in February. I was way more prepared for that 5 mile race than I was for today's 5K.
I got off work at 5 and drove directly to Oak Harbor HS for the race. My most direct route took me down Woodville Rd and I got to see some of the devastation caused by the tornados. I tried to maintain my speed and not be a gawker, but it's a train wreck and everybody slows to look at a train wreck. As such, everyone in front of me was slowed, so I had no choice. Since the race was scheduled for a 7pn start, I took a side trip to get some Gatorade. I still got to the school before 6pm. Coach TD, Jim and Jude showed up shortly after that. Our 5th runner - who actually was our #1 runner - was the last to arrive. We checked in and did some warm ups before the race started.
When they yelled "GO!" I took off a bit too fast. Coach TD caught me at about the .3 mile area and told me I was slowing down as he ran past. I told him that I had no bounce in my feet and I did my best to stay on his heels. The first mile was 8:06. The second mile 16:23, so I slowed a little. I finished at 25:43 which is way off my record pace and nothing to be proud of. I came in 40th place and finished about 8 feet behind Coach TD. You'll notice, on the left side, he now occupies the top slot in the statistics. Until I beat him again, he'll remain there.
My foot did bother me a bit, but that's not the reason for the results of the race. I haven't done any core workouts in far too long and I haven't jumped rope in as long. I firmly believe that jumping rope really adds to the spring in my step and rebound when running pose. Rebound = speed in my opinion. To make matters even worse, I missed a kiteboarding session tonight, too. |
Betty Boop Wed Jun 23 10:01:00 AM Just want to say a big thanks for making our visit so wonderful. More memories to tuck away. These ones I don't forget - just where I put that paper I was reading a minute ago! Reply |
BizB Mon Jun 21 07:39:24 AM 'fer - You burned 1500 and I burned 1100 calories. You can see how losing weight means you don't work as hard. And, that as you lose weight, losing more weight is a just tad harder. Reply |
BizB Thu Jun 17 08:22:20 AM I posted this picture on Monday and on Tuesday when I rode with the TAB guys, the owner of this car was one of the 5 riders.
I don't recall having seen him before then. Reply |
'fer Tue Jun 15 03:00:39 PM Its is Coach TD it really is I'm tired of being this heavy and can't wait to keep up with you guys in the runs/bike rides you guys do so often! It is getting easier to bike though running still hurts my calfs after about the first mile or so not really sure if I'm doing something wrong or if its still my muscles adjusting to me working them so hard!
Thanks for the congrats it keeps me going even more! Reply |
coach td Mon Jun 14 09:32:37 PM In case you haven't noticed the work outs we post include our weight. I weigh myself every Monday morning and use that number thoughout the week. I read 'fer's post tonight about his breakthrough ride yesterday. Congrats and keep em' comin'. What really caught my eye is.........his weight. He's dropped 9 pounds!!!!!!!!!!! That's great news and I hope that is another reason to keep on keepin' on. Go 'fer!!! Reply |

BizB Thu Jun 10 08:54:54 AM Wow, I really made it sound like I had no fun at all. That's not the case. Any time I can get out and test my abilities, be it in a running race, or on a breakfast ride with the MVW group or in Lake Erie chop and 20+ mph winds, I'm having a good time.
Yesterday, I got to run with a couple of my favorite XC coaches - one of whom I consider to be among my best friends (if not the best (if only I could get him on a kite) but I digress). The weather was awesome and I got to run in a race with The Kenyan who finished the race in 15:53. We wondered, after the race, if he was satisfied with that time. At 15:53, that means he was done running, toweled off, turned in his #1 popsicle stick, had his cookie and already did his cool down by the time I finished the race. Good times! Reply |
