I was westbound on Airport Hwy in the left lane. There was a car driven by a woman named Rozz in the right lane slightly, ahead of me. When Rozz's car cleared the intersection of Airport and Pinebrook, the green car pulled out to turn left (east-bound) onto Airport. I hit her on the driver's side at 45mph. I never got to touch the brakes. The airbag hitting me in the face was the first indication that something went wrong. I had the wind knocked out of me and when I did finally take a full breath, my chest hurt... bad. I looked around and examined my extremities to make sure I wasn't too badly injured. Nothing major seemed to be wrong with me. I looked on the passenger seat for my cell phone. Of course, it wasn't there. I looked down onto the floorboards and saw the battery wedged between the door and the frame, so I knew it was - at best - in pieces; at worst - destroyed.
I tried to open my door. It only opened about 3 inches, so I turned and pushed with both hands and then added a foot for good measure. It opened enough to exit. At this point, I had no idea what I hit or where it was... whatever it was. I was facing the wrong way on Airport and that confused me a little. I expected to see a car in front of me, but it was behind me. The green car's side-door opened and an older gentleman - probably in his 50s or early 60s got out and stumbled over to the curb on the far side of Airport. He sat and then collapsed on the grass strip between the road and the bike path. I walke over toward him and asked him if he was ok. He mumbled something about call his mom and haver her pick up the kids - and rattled off an address. He was bleeding from above his left ear. Not bad... but he was definitely suffering from a head injury. I started to walk away from him and he called out, "My baby was in the car. I don't see my dauhter."
I freaked out and ran over to the car and looked in the back seat. There, I saw an empty child's car seat. HOLY CRAP! The baby must have been thrown from the car! They must not have had her buckled in or something... I thought. I backed up and looked around the car for an infant. I listened, but didn't hear anybody crying. I walked around the car to the trunk which had sprung open in the impact. I pulled it open and looked inside. No baby there. I walked around to the driver's side and looked through the window there. No baby. I ran back over to a pile of clothes in the roadway and tried to see if the baby was wrapped up in those clothes. No baby there. I ran over to the fence along the bike path and looked in the weeds. No baby there. I ran back toward the car and Rozz was attending to the driver who I hadn't seen until then. I asked her if she found the baby. She said that there was no baby... the "child" was the driver. THANK GOD.
Rozz had tried to get a response from the driver, but it wasn't until she was checking for a pulse that the woman stirred and made it clear that she was alive.
The next 20 minutes is a blur.
An EMS squad showed up and asked me if I was ok as I leaned against my car re-assembling my cell phone. I told them that I was ok and that they needed to attend to "her" - pointing at the car. They saw the guy on the roadside and probably assumed that was who I meant because they made a b-line for him. Rozz and I both called out that there was a woman in the car that needed the immediate attention. They went to her. Another EMS squad showed up and went directly to the guy on the roadside. A cop showed up. I told him that they'd need the jaws of life. The woman in the car was pinned in there, pretty bad. He got on his radio and talked cop-talk. At this point, I walked over and cleared the pile of clothes and other stuff that had flown from their trunk from the roadway. I just piled it up on the grass. By this time, they'd already put the old guy on a backboard and taken him away to the hospital.
When the second fire truck showed up, they came running with the Jaws of Life. They cut the top of the car off. They cut out the windshield. They cut out one of the seats. They must have had 15 firemen attending to the car and the woman. One fireman sat in the car with a blue tarp over the woman to protect her from glass etc. He was talking to her. I thought that was a good sign.
Another EMS crew showed up and insisted that I get checked out. I went over and got into the back. They hooked me up and did an EKG. Everything looked normal. Even after all that, my heartrate was under 100! I told them I didn't need to go to the hospital - though, I'm rethinking that right now. My chest hurts a LOT.
When I got out of the EMS unit, LifeFlight was getting ready to take off. They had just finished extracting her from the car and they were putting her on the chopper. She must be in really bad shape if they took her via Life Flight when MCO is 3 miles away.
I sure hope they total my car! It'll never be the same after a crash like that.
coach td Tue Aug 31 07:19:17 PM Just got done hanging with Biz. He looks better today than yesterday although he's moving with economical purpose. I'd agree with the vicodin hazyness but his drive for forward motion is still present, there's just no rudder to steer with. Biz has what I refer to as 'applied patience'. Certain times he'll spend a bunch of energy making something successful while other situations it's off with their heads, right now. Healing from this trama and all that's connected with it best be careful or they'll be headed up the steps to the gallows! Reply
BizB Tue Aug 31 11:51:02 AM I really haven't had much time to use it. I got it on Saturday. Sunday was the accident. Since then, I've been pretty well medicated. Concentration is difficult on Vicodin.
I'm not a big fan of how it treats PDF files, but it's better than not allowing PDF at all. Reply

BizB Mon Aug 30 11:12:28 AM I'm sore, as you would expect. I didn't sleep very well. I couldn't really find a comfortable position and Vicodin doesn't really let me get into a deep slumber, either. Going to try to nap, now.
Trying to arrange for a rental car and get the ball rolling on my car this afternoon. I'm not very excited about the rental car opportunities given my policy limits. Reply

BizB Sun Aug 29 07:26:06 PM fer took me to MCO to get a chest x-ray. It was negative, but the doctor said that it can take a while for a break in the breast plate to show up and that if I'm not feeling better in a week, I should seek another x-ray.
Vicodin is my friend.
I already sent an email to my boss saying that I would be working from home tomorrow but that I would be heavily medicated. I'm not worried about work. They'll survive. Reply
