Replacement Windows
2010-11-02
Today, I dropped a load of cash at Lowe's. I'm replacing every window in the house with vinyl replacement windows. I was really impressed at how inexpensive the front window ended up being. That window is 57"X75" and I'm puttin in a 3-secion window with 1/4 width side panels so that I'll get 50% air flow in the summer when I open them. That'll be nice.

The total cost of the windows was $1742 before I applied the 10% coupon which I got by making a trip to the USPS and picking up a change of address packet. That saved me $164! Plus, I'll get a tax credit because they have a U-factor of 30 which qualifies them for the credit. Here are some pics from the install of the first two.

The only problem that I've run into is that the trim doesn't fit back in the frame because, once plummed, the window sits at a different angle in the opening. I'll have to trim them, or shim out the other trim pieces. I'm not sure what the right approach is. I'll ask when I go back to Lowe's for the other windows.

John Spaid was the guy who waited on me. He was very helpful and I intend to let his manager know that I valued his input.

As you can see, I left the storm windows on and closed them. That'll add another layer of air-space for the winter. In the spring, I'll remove those and dress up the outside.

The blind stop is the part that keeps the window from falling out to the outside. They're labeled here as "stop" but the instructions I have call it a blind-stop.

Today, I installed 4 more windows. Bubbles room and the toy room are done. The only remaining windows are, the window above the sink in the kitchen, my bedroom windows and the big window in the front. Once I have them all done, I'll go back and adjust the first two that I did so that they're up against the blind stops. Then, I'll fill in all the gaps with the spray foam and clean up the trim and paint.

I forgot that the sill on your windows is different than mine, our sill ran all the way over to the storm window which was the only window we had.

I couldn't even fit any foam in most of the spaces. The nozzle/straw is to big to even fit between the frame and the rough opening. I have stuffed some fiberglass insulation between them.

I can't bring the window flush unless I remove the sill. I don't want to go through that. Instead, the guy at Lowe's suggested that I push the window against the blind stop and then the trim will fit correctly. The window will be 1/2 inch out of plum, but that won't hurt anything.

This not to be critical but offering a suggested method of doing the windows.

Did you use the non expanding foam around the opening between the window and the frame? We brought the windows out flush with the wall after removing the old trim and than put new trim on using trim that only required straight cuts wit a square block at the top so we didn't have to worry abt non square openings. I can send you a picture if want.

WOW, very impressed. You guys are like your dad in that you are not afraid to tackle anything. We also left on the now storm windows but they were the only ones we had. We put new molding on and painted it. May be an idea for you. Great work son.
