Saturday, Big Bro was kind enough to help me pick up my remaining windows from Lowe's. On the way home with the windows, he offered to help me install the big front window. I took him up on the offer. That was the best decision that I made all day.
We removed the old window and realized that we needed some sill-tape, caulk (lol) and at least one roofing nail to hold down the aluminum flashing that was peeling up in one corner. Big Bro offered to run to the store to get these things since he had to go to Sam's club to get a new battery any way. I didn't mind waiting because I appreciate all the help he was giving and I could install the other three windows while he was gone. And, that's basically what I did. However, since it was getting a little chilly, I decided to lift the big window up and place it in the opening. When I did, I noticed that there were some rather large gaps on the left and right sides. This troubled me. I re-examined the way the trim pieces used to be in the rough opening and I realized that when I measured, I measured from the inside dimensions of what ended up being trim pieces, not the rough opening. Since these are 3/4 inch thick boards, my rough opening was actually 1.5 inches larger than I had measured. And so, my window was too small for the opening. I called Big Bro and explained this to him. We quickly came up with a fix and he bought the required boards to put that fix in place.
When he got back, we dug into the situation a bit further and found that even that fix wasn't going to be sufficient. We needed more. We needed wider boards, we thought. When we got back to Lowe's, Big Bro's brain kicked into high gear and he realized that if we shimmed in the sides, we had to change the trim on the exterior of the window to hide the newly shimmed rough opening. With this in mind, we ventured into Lowe's and bought the supplies we needed - including the sill-tape, and caulk which he had previously went to buy, but forgot.
Back home, we continued our efforts to install the window. Eventually, we realized that we would be much better off replacing the rotted out window sill and the exterior trim piece on the south side of the window. Since the window was a big open gaping hole that couldn't be masked with the new window placed temporarrily as it had been before, Big Bro offered to go pick up the wood, take it to his house, and manufacture the replacement sill - since he has all the coolest tools. I must say, he did a phenomenal job, too. It is an exact replica of what had been in there, without the 80 years of weathering. In the end, we replaced the sill, two of the exterior trim pieces and the window. It looks awesome now!
