Ride #21
2013-03-28
I quit.

I'm hanging up my cleats.

My new goal weight is 289.

A resting heart rate of 40 is overrated.

A max heart rate of 186 at the age of 46 is rediculous anyway. Who needs to be that fit?

Seriously.

I'm done.

When riding one's bike on River Rd commands cries of "You're an asshole!" from drivers on the opposite side of the street, traveling in the opposite direction, I can no longer feel the slightest modicum of safety on the road.

I'm glad my last road ride was a fun one, just the same. I didn't set a new PR on harvard circle and I knew it as soon as I reached the top of the hill. My legs just weren't under me like should have been at that point. I was struggling to maintain 19mph. Then, it took me until the golf course to get my breathing under control - despite having missed the PR. My Harvard Circle segment time was 5 seconds short of the Personal Record. Oh well.

On the way back, I decided to hit that "Weight Loss Workout" where you pedal like your life depends on it for 8 seconds and then soft pedal for 12 seconds. I got in nearly the full 20 minutes. It was a bit awkward toward the end when I was traversing through the neighborhood just this side of the AWT. Despite wanting to cough up both of my lungs and sit on the curb for 20 minutes, I was still able to glance to my right as I passed some of the scenic overlooks along the Maumee river. There was a brilliant orange sunset in the western sky (opposite of where I was looking) that cast a beautiful range of colors onto the still-naked trees on the far bank of the river. If I had any breath left, that scene would have taken it.

That weight loss 8/12 workout is a hell of a workout. I encourrage you to try it, even if weight loss isn't your goal - like my new goal of 289.

I guess I should start looking around for someone who wants to buy my Michigan Mountain Mayhem bib. I have no need for it any more.

I love the HR graph for that workout.

I'm kidding of course. I could never give up riding unless I wasn't physically capable any longer.
