Four eyes?
2005-01-20
Today, I went to the eye doctor and I was told that I'm getting old. The 39 year old Korean (I think) hottie doctor that gave me my eye exam was very nice. She explained that the problems that I'm experiencing are likely the result of a combination of age and staring at a computer screen for many hours per day. She said that my eyes get comfortable focusing on something that's 18 inches away for the majority of the day. Then, when I leave for the day, my eyes are forced to focus on distant items. Because of my ever increasing age, the layer of my eyes that flexes to allow the lens to focus is getting a little more stiff (some things get stiff, others don't when you get old... or so I've heard) and it isn't adjusting to the change in focus as easily. This is why I feel the discomfort after I'm home and why I described the problem as being distance vision issues. In fact, it is up close where my eyes are working harder to focus.
Technically, I'm still 20/20 but I could use a very very minor perscription for my right eye (mostly) if I wanted to try to relax my eyes a bit when I'm on the computer. They suggested anti-reflective lenses on the glasses and I should try to move the monitor away from my face when I'm working.

I haven't decided if I want to try out the idea of wearing glasses just yet. I mean, I don't want to need another crutch in my daily life.

Great second game yesterday - GO PATS! We didn't see the first game as were were helping a friend celebrate her birthday.
I also took time to win another cribbage game but you all know that the wins will be over now because of my bragging. Oh well, I always say enjoy life one dat at a time. Try to stay warm all.

I'm tempted to cancel the dish. The only one who watches it is 'fer and given his new job, I don't think he'll have much time to stare at the boob tube.

BBCK will miss it for a little while, but I bet I could find theings to do that are way more fun.

We have also decided TV is not watchable most of the time so have taken up Scrabble - for 2 evenings - it is Ma-rent -2 and Pa-rent - 0. I love those numbers as he usually gets the tiles and I get the garbage. Fun!!

My cable just went out.

This isn't good since I didn't get any movies for tonight. I could read but I generally read w/ the TV on. The house gets too quiet.

Well after another week of bitter battle on the crib board here are the results. We missed one day of play due to Big Bro being here along with sister Mary. The week started off on an ominous tangent for Pa-rent as Ma-rent managed to hex the cards in her favor 5 straight games. Do not loose faith in Pa-rent as he has come back with some great pegging and recovered from almost the bowels of h---- and is now defending his championship position from 2004.

Results to date for Jan
Ma-rent 12 Games
Pa-rent 09 games

All you Pa-rent fans and some who sit on the fence get down on your ever loving and pray for me, only 11 days to go for the month

Then stop staring at your unit all day! hehe!

I actually had a similar problem. My vision is 20/20 but I was getting headaches regularly because I stare at a screen 10 hours a day. I went with the glasses options and it helped at lot. I'm wearing them right now in fact.

I'm having the same problem. I went to the eye doctor right before the holidays. They said the eyes are just tired from looking at the screen all day. However, I don't currently have 20/20 vision anymore. I am at 20/30. I am showing signs of near-sightedness. I had a goal of age 45 before needing glasses. I don't know that I'll make it. My Dad was 45 when he got glasses. A little family competition. I'm holding out as long as I can!

Berhaps the word should be astigmatism

It sounds like you have what they call a stigmatism and is common with folks who have great distant vision and work with closeup crap all day as you and I have been doing. There is one exercise that I was taught and that is to take a break every once in a while and concentrate on something far away and then shift your focus to something close. Do this a couple of times every hour.
This info is years old but was designed to build up muscles that have become lazy.
I agree with you to avoid getting corrective lenses as it only makes the eye mucles more and mor dependant on glasses. After all that is what they are trying to sell suggest you look up "stigmatism " on the internet. I'm only gessing that this is your problem as it sounds like what I went thr years ago, and now require corrective lenses that maybe I could have avoided.

Oh, and I got my complimentary kite from Invento-HQ today. They sent it to me in exchange for my having given them a contact point (redskytoledo) in the area. I'll probably have a chance to fly it this weekend, so watch for another update.
