Concussion 2005-03-08 |

Another day of snowboarding. This was the largest group this year with about 11 people. I got some nice video of Ryan doing a little jump over a itty-bitty kicker. And, I took some video of my view as I went down the slopes. It was a really good day for snowboarding except for the fact that it had been 60 degrees and raining here yesterday and the "snow" was really ice. This was the first Tuesday where I've gone and it wasn't snowing. It was sunny and windy all day which was nice. Sunny = increased visibility. Just about 3pm, Whitey, a newbie to the group and to snowboarding in general decided that it was time to try a jump in the terrain park. I went down first so that I could set up with the camera and get a pic or video of the stunt... expecting to get a nice shot of Ryan or Mark if nothing else. When I got to the bottom, near the last jump, I set up on my knees facing back up the hill and turned the camera on only to discover that the batteries were dead. Since I knew they weren't exactly new went I left the house, I had the sense to grab an extra pair of batteries and I fumbled to dig them out of my pocket. Mark came in and stopped just behind me so that he could watch the other two. I was still fumbling with the batteries when I heard Mark say, "Oh... that wasn't good." or something to that effect. I looked up to see Whitey laying at the base of the landing-side of the jump... out cold. A bit further up the landing area, there was this divot.

When we got Whitey up and moved over to the bottom of the ski-lift, we did the normal "check to see if he's okay" by asking him tough questions likeWhat day is today? What is the square root of 2?What is pi out to 6 digits? He was able to answer each of the questions without any problem, so we got on the lift. When we got to the top, it was obvious that he was out on his feet. He didn't remember getting to the top of the hill. He had no idea how to put his feet in the bindings and when he tried his legs were rubber and he almost went down... again. Ryan walked with him to the bottom while Mark and I got in 2 more runs. Concussion: 2. (Med.) A condition of lowered functional activity, without visible structural change, produced in an organ by a shock, as by fall or blow; as, a concussion of the brain. People with concussions are funny. Whitey couldn't remember much of anything. He kept saying things like... Those look like my [insert some item that was his like shoes/shirt/goggles]What happened? Is this blood? (he had a cut from his eye-glasses)My head really hurts. And then 2 minutes later, we'd go through the same things again... all the way home.Ryan, send me an email and let me know how Whitey is doing... mkay? |

Whitey's fine other than a "classic concussion," he's sore, he doesn't remember from the jump to the ride home, does remember lunch and snowboarding now.

BizB Wed Mar 09 07:58:15 AM At one point, we got so tired of telling Whitey the same story over and over that Ryan used the voice memo feature on his cell phone to make Whitey record himself saying:
"Went snowboarding. Tried jumping. Fell down. Went Boom. Hurt head."
Then, he just played that back to Whitey when he asked what happened. Reply |
